If your child is taking the 11+ exams, there’s something you deserve to know as a parent.
This journey isn’t just about papers, practice books, or percentages. It’s about confidence, resilience, and emotional wellbeing.
Here’s what we wish more parents were told:
💛 1. The pressure is real, but it’s not the full story
The 11+ can feel overwhelming, but your child’s worth is not defined by a test. You’re doing an amazing job simply by being present, consistent and encouraging.
📚 2. Your support matters more than any tutor
Whether you're helping with past papers or just listening when things get tough. Your belief in them shapes how they believe in themselves.
🧠 3. Smart prep beats excessive prep
It’s not about hours of revision. It’s about focused practice, reviewing mistakes, and building skills over time.
🧘♀️ 4. Rest, balance and fun are part of the plan
Downtime is not a distraction, it’s fuel for performance. Protect their joy and curiosity during this season.
🧪 5. Mock exams give clarity, not pressure
They’re not about judgement, they’re about guidance. A well-designed mock shows exactly where to focus next, so you and your child can work smarter, not harder.
You're not alone in this.
And you don’t need to guess what’s working and what’s not.

It’s one of the most asked questions and the answer depends on your child’s confidence, learning style, and your goals as a family.
Here’s a breakdown to help you make the right choice:
Year 3 – Early Awareness
At this stage, it’s all about building love for learning:
- Reading widely
- Expanding vocabulary
- Developing logical thinking through games and puzzles
Year 4 – Foundations
Now’s the time to gently introduce:
- Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning
- Light topic-based worksheets
- Puzzle-style books (Bond, CGP)
Year 5 – Structured Prep Begins
This is the key year for most students:
- Weekly sessions for each subject
- Start using mock-style questions
- Track progress and identify weak areas
- Introduce time-bound exercises
Year 6 – Final Stretch
- Focus on full mock exams
- Simulate real conditions (timed, silent, formal)
- Sharpen speed, accuracy, confidence
- Don’t introduce new topics — refine what they know

Feeling the pressure of 11+ prep as a parent? You’re not alone.
And neither is your child.
The 11 Plus journey can be intense — not just academically, but emotionally too. Here’s how to support your child *beyond the worksheets*:
💛 1. Prioritise emotional safety
High-pressure environments can lead to burnout or low confidence. Encourage effort, not just results. Praise their persistence.
🧘♂️ 2. Teach calming routines
Simple breathing, stretching, or a 10-min “unplugged” walk before mock practice can reduce anxiety and improve focus.
🧠 3. Create a sustainable study rhythm
Cramming leads to frustration. 3–4 short sessions per week, with breaks and downtime, helps consolidate learning without stress.
💬 4. Keep communication open
Ask: “What felt hard today?” or “What topic is making you nervous?” Help them name their feelings. It builds resilience.
🧪 5. Don’t wait for the real exam to find out what’s not working
A mock test under real conditions reveals not just academic gaps, but how your child handles pressure.

Let’s talk about the 8 most common mistakes students make in the 11+ and how to avoid them.
1. Skipping instructions
→ Always read them carefully. A single missed word can change the meaning.
2. Rushing through easy questions
→ Mistakes on easy marks can cost more than tricky ones.
3. Spending too long on one question
→ Learn when to move on and come back.
4. Not practising under timed conditions
→ Speed matters as much as accuracy in the 11+.
5. Ignoring weak areas
→ Don’t avoid Verbal or Non-Verbal just because they feel unfamiliar.
6. Not reviewing mistakes
→ If they don’t learn *why* they got it wrong, it’ll happen again.
7. Over-preparing the night before
→ Rest is as important as study. Brain = muscle.
8. Letting nerves take over
→ Teach breathing techniques + calm routines to manage anxiety.
Success in the 11+ is not just about what your child knows — it’s about how they perform under pressure.
That’s why we recommend starting with a free mock exam. It helps identify mistakes before they count.

Verbal Reasoning in the 11+ can be tricky even for bright children.
But with the right approach at home, you can help your child feel more confident and capable.
Here’s what every parent should know:
Verbal Reasoning is not about grammar or writing. Verbal reasoning tests your child’s ability to understand, analyse and manipulate written information — word patterns, logic, synonyms, codes and more.
Think of it as “mental agility with words”. It often includes:
- Spotting letter sequences and patterns
- Solving word-based logic puzzles
- Understanding analogies and opposites
It is challenging because it’s rarely taught directly in school. That means even high-achieving students might struggle, not due to lack of ability, but lack of exposure.
How can you help at home?
1. Play word games
Try Boggle, Hangman, or even verbal code-breaking challenges together.
2. Use structured practice books
We recommend Bond or CGP’s 11+ Verbal Reasoning series — short sessions, 2–3x/week.
3. Build vocabulary daily
Word of the day, synonyms, and mini spelling challenges can go a long way.
4. Review mistakes together
Don’t just mark, talk through the logic. Why was option B wrong? Why was D better?

Many parents assume that if their child is studying regularly, they must be making progress. But not all revision is effective and some habits may even hold them back.
Here are 3 common warning signs that your child’s 11+ preparation might be off course:
🔍 1. They’re only revising what they already know
Re-reading notes, revisiting the same worksheets, or sticking to favourite subjects feels safe, but it doesn’t move the needle. Real growth comes from working on weaker areas and embracing challenge.
Try this: Introduce regular mock-style questions across all 11+ topics. Review what they got wrong and why, not just the score.
🕒 2. They’re not timing their practice
One of the biggest exam-day risks is poor time management. If they’re working through questions at their own pace now, they might struggle under timed pressure later.
Try this: Start using a timer for sections. Can they finish a Maths paper in 50 minutes? Are they rushing at the end? Mock exams help build this stamina.
🔍 3. They’re not learning from their mistakes
Doing papers is useful, but only if they’re reviewed properly. If your child isn’t understanding why they got a question wrong, the same mistakes will resurface.
Try this: After each practice session, sit together and analyse 3–5 incorrect answers. Get them to explain where they went wrong and how they’d approach it next time.
The solution? Targeted practice with proper feedback.
That’s why we offer free 11+ mock tests with detailed reports, so you can stop guessing and start supporting your child where they really need it.
