I work with students who need that extra bit of support with learning and emotional well-being. Regulate, then educate
I teach regulation strategies to help students feel calm and make learning more accessible. Hello and welcome. My name is Meredith and I am a UK qualified and experienced primary school teacher. My background before teaching was in psychology and I have always been interested in the emotional well-being of my students. Since leaving the classroom I trained as a psycho-therapeutic counsellor where
I learnt about trauma, the nervous system and the implications of having a dysregulated system. I also learnt the value and importance of a caring, attuned person listening carefully. I have worked as an academic tutor online for over two years though I have long known I wanted to combine my knowledge and experience of teaching and counselling for the benefit of children and young people. Through my own personal experiences of trauma, anxiety, stress, burnout and a late-life autism diagnosis I have researched and sought out ways to help myself. I truly believe first-hand, personal experience - with reflection and integrated understanding - is the best place to teach and guide others from. So what have I learnt? Research has shown that students cannot learn or function properly when their nervous system is in a state of heightened arousal (or dysregulated). Regulation is the foundation of all learning, relationships and well-being. I have discovered many ways to emotionally regulate my brain and body to quickly return to a state of calm. I have undertaken training to teach regulation skills to children and young people. I have learnt that having an attuned, empathic and regulated adult actively listen with care can calm an anxious or stressed person. What do I do? I work with parents and children to understand any barriers to learning, whether it be anxiety, stress, overwhelm, sensory issues, neuro-diversity, friendship challenges or other emotional distress that can create nervous system dysregulation. I listen carefully and create a plan to help. This may be through regulation exercises, psycho-education around the nervous system, teaching emotional literacy, getting creative together, or simply reflective listening. The aim is to establish a sense of calm, ease and confidence in learning. We use a range of tools including: breathing techniques, movement, mindfulness exercises, emotional literacy and vocabulary, stories & imagery. I also offer academic sessions to support with school work for KS1 & KS2.
* All sessions are password protected on Zoom with the additional use of bitpaper software for educational, creative and therapeutic purposes.
* An optional choice of Zoom filters & backgrounds can be applied to create a sense of ease and enjoyment.
* Sessions usually work best when the student can disclose and share in confidence.
* Sessions include feedback/ general progress updates, though I do not disclose the content of confidential conversations that occur in the sessions with students. You and/or your child have the right to:
• expect a quality service that meets your expectations
• expect all personal information to be held in confidence
• expect to be treated with respect and sensitivity
• be told if I cannot, or do not feel I can, provide you with the support you are looking for
• be told if your child is not making progress after a reasonable amount of time
• give feedback if you are not happy about something, and to have that feedback taken seriously
• cancel an appointment up to 24 hours before schedule
• rearrange an appointment up to 24 hours before schedule
Your Responsibilities
You and/or your child have the responsibility to:
• book a session at least 24 hours in advance so I can prepare your session well
• pay for your session 24 hours in advance of the session – unpaid sessions will not be held
• provide any necessary information that is needed to prepare a quality session (academic or emotional)
• be on time – sessions which start late will still end at the planned finish time
* Important:
These sessions are not counselling sessions. I support children to learn how to calm their nervous system. All sessions are confidential except in the case where students may express the threat of harm to themselves or others. If I feel that the support you need is out of my scope I will help to redirect you to a suitable child counselling service. While I provide emotional and well-being support, I am not a registered child counsellor. I have a diploma in psycho-therapeutic counselling for adults and over 11 years' classroom experience with children. I have undertaken trainings to support children with anxiety and self-regulation challenges, and continue to undertake relevant CPD to ensure I stay current and aware of developments in the field.

Calm, connection and comfort are so important. But if we are to offer this to our children, we need to be able to do it for ourselves as adults first. How do you connect and calm the little one inside you? What words of comfort do you speak to yourself?

I suffered a serious period of burnout a few years ago after not listening to my body's signals to rest. Now I listen closely. Are you listening to what your body is telling you?
The sessions I offer provide the chance for children to practice internal mindful listening - an invaluable skill for life!

It's officially summer! The longest day of the year has arrived; the day with the longest hours of daylight and the point at which we in the northern hemisphere are closest to the sun. It's a turning point in the year; a moment of reflection. What achievements are you celebrating from the first half of the year? What goals / intentions do you have for the second half? What are you doing with this long day? Soak up the sun and let your inner child play!😊

Attuning accurately to a child's feelings, staying available and nearby, staying calm and expressing this with empathic reflection helps them to feel seen, heard, safe and can calm their activated nervous system. Here are some ways to do it...

This explains why drumming, swinging, body percussion and dancing to a beat makes me feel calm and happy! It makes the brain more accessible for learning too - win win!
It's such a great feeling when a child I work with gains in confidence! 💜

In lessons we often expect children to be able to focus almost like we as adults do. However, childhood development experts generally say that a reasonable attention span to expect of a child is two to three minutes per year of their age. That's the period of time for which a typical child can maintain focus on a given task.
Average attention spans work out like this:
2 years old: four to six minutes
4 years old: eight to 12 minutes
6 years old: 12 to 18 minutes
8 years old: 16 to 24 minutes
10 years old: 20 to 30 minutes
12 years old: 24 to 36 minutes
14 years old: 28 to 42 minutes
16 years old: 32 to 48 minutes
Of course there are often additional challenges children may face that interfere with their ability to focus, such as anxiety, ADHD, sensory overload and sensory processing.

We can notice what a regulated or dysregulated nervous system state feels like when we tune in to our bodies and minds and notice what is happening. Regulation is an ongoing, continuous process and the choices we make affect how we feel. We would all choose to feel calm, joyful and at ease rather than stressed, anxious or agitated. We can help ourselves with the choices we make.

Some great alternatives to 'How was your day?' which children can find difficult to answer.

Being in nature and doing yoga are both known to have wonderfully positive effects on our well-being! Why not incorporate both of them with some wild nature yoga?! 🦋🐻🐸🐍
Head out in your garden or find a local green space and try outdoors yoga! Hearing the sounds of birds, trees or water whilst doing yoga really helps your body and mind relax. If you can't find anywhere outdoors to do yoga, listen to birdsong in your living room, close your eyes and imagine you're in the woods.🌳

I love this article about how movement aids learning!
Here are a few snippets from the article:
'The more active the body is in learning, the more connections the brain can make with the content.'
'Giving students this additional, whole-body experience to practice these facts using movement and rhythm has truly helped the kids memorize them'
'With these math moves, students are able to wake up their minds, get their jitters out, and prepare their bodies for calm and focused work'
Some of the many reasons I incorporate movement into sessions!
