Nairobi, Kenya, is hosting the UN Biodiversity talks this year, where negotiators are aiming to reach a global pact that conserves nature and wildlife. So far, negotiators are calling on countries to allot 30% of their land and sea bodies for conservation by the year 2030. The local Kenyan population is also calling on negotiators to respect their roles in protecting biodiversity and the knowledge they hold about the land they live in.

South Africa will start producing the first African-based Covid-19 Vaccine in Cape Town. Afrigen; a biotech company based in Cape Town, is working with Univercells Group; a Belgian biotech company to develop the mRna shots. The development of the vaccine in Africa will help transfer and administer the shots to other African countries, hence alleviating their medical dependence on Western countries.

Algeria aims to invest in it’s youth by increasing literacy levels and planting the entrepreneurial spirit in students’ mindsets. After it’s independence in 1962, the country had a very low literacy rate, as 85% of the population was illiterate. Today, almost 100% of 15-25 year olds can read and write. The country is aiming to provide its students and young professionals with the facilities and opportunities they need to grow within their own country, and not abroad.

Nevine El Qabbaj; Egyptian Minister of Social Solidarity has shed light on the importance of empowering African women, as they are responsible for 66% of the work and 50% of the produce in Africa. However, women only earn 10% of the income and 1% of property. The empowerment of women is therefore critical for the development of the Continent, and a prerequisite to its sustainable future.

Erriadh is a village in on the Tunisian island; Djerba. The village is now a walking art gallery, thanks to the 150+ artists that have used its walls to create street art, murals, and paintings. Although the village has over 2,000 years of history, it’s newly acquired art has added an edge to it, making it one of the most beautiful open-air museums in the world🇹🇳

The VivaTech conference held in Paris annually (this year from 15-18 June, 2022) is dedicated to celebrating and shedding light on innovation and startups. This year, the conference organized the “Africa Tech Awards” to celebrate African startups in the health, environmental, and business industries.

Africa CEO Forum is the largest international meeting of the African private sector. On the 13th and 14th of June, 1,500 business leaders and policy makers, 50 Presidents and ministers, and investors gathered to discuss the role of the private sector in the development of the African continent. The Conference took place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Coffee grows in well-shaded areas. The coffee pickers of Mozambique have made use of this advantage and started planting coffee in the mountain of Gorongosa. With each coffee plant, a tree is planted on the mountain to help shade the coffee. With the plantation and harvesting of coffee, coffee pickers aim to restore Mozambique’s forests and ecosystems. The community surrounding the Gorongosa forest has also gradually become interested in the planting of coffee since it provides them with employment opportunities and ways to support themselves. Now, the Gorongosa forest has become home to 300,000 coffee plants, 400,000 cashew trees, hundreds of beehives, and most importantly hundreds of jobs.

Experts say that the biggest challenge to intra-African trade is the lack of proper infrastructure. The Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) is a cross-border financial market system that enables transactions across the African continent. It aims to ease the impediments to intra-African trade and accelerate the integration of African economies. It is estimated that the platform will save transaction costs worth five billion euros per year.

Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt 🇪🇬 prepares to host the COP27 Climate Change Conference in November. Climate enthusiasts are anticipating an increase in tourism levels in the city after Covid restrictions ease gradually. However, they worry that an increase in tourism levels will damage the Red Sea’s fragile ecosystem. In 2019, the City’s municipal authorities banned the use of single-use plastics. The Conference hopes to raise awareness about the ecosystem’s fragility and the importance of taking care of it in sustainable ways.

Sossusvlei is Namibia’s most attractive and well-known destination 🇳🇦. It lies in the Southern Namib Desert and is characterized by vast red dunes that can reach as high as 400 meters above ground.
