For a sacrifice (Udhiyah) to be valid, the animal must be free from defects. Therefore, the following animals are not acceptable for sacrifice:

▪ A one-eyed animal whose blindness is obvious, meaning the eye is sunken or severely damaged. However, if the defect is slight and not clearly noticeable, the sacrifice is still valid.

▪ A sick animal whose illness is apparent. An obvious illness is one that affects the meat and makes it unsuitable for consumption, such as severe mange or scabies. Included in this ruling is an animal that has suffered a head injury or fallen from a height and lost consciousness.

▪ A lame animal whose limp is obvious. If the lameness is slight, it is excused. The criterion is whether the animal can walk with healthy animals of its kind and continue eating, grazing, and drinking normally.

▪ A broken, extremely weak, or emaciated animal that has no marrow in its bones due to severe thinness and weakness. Such an animal is not acceptable for sacrifice. Experts can usually identify this condition, and one sign is the animal’s lack of appetite.

This is based on the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

«“Four animals are not permissible for sacrifice: the one-eyed animal with obvious blindness, the sick animal with obvious illness, the lame animal with obvious lameness, and the weak emaciated animal that has no marrow in its bones.”
— Narrated by Abu Dawood and An-Nasa’i.»

As for a person who bought an animal for sacrifice and it later became injured or defective, he may still offer it as a sacrifice, and there is no blame upon him as long as he was not negligent.

قال الله تعالى: ﴿ وَالْفَجْرِ ۝١ وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ ۝٢ ﴾
"By the dawn, and [by] ten nights"
(Surah Al-Fajr: 1-2)
'the ten nights' refer to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.

From the Authority of Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than those done during these ten days."
(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar La ilaha illa Allah
