π Why does this matter?
Although Saudi Arabia has made remarkable progress toward malaria elimination, imported malaria cases continue to pose important clinical and public health challenges in the southwestern regions of the country.
π Key Findings:
β’ Plasmodium vivax was the most common malaria species identified
β’ Most cases occurred among young adult male expatriates, supporting the imported nature of malaria in the region
β’ Severe malaria was identified in 43.7% of patients
β’ Severe anemia and jaundice were the most frequent WHO severity criteria
β’ Higher parasitemia levels and non-Saudi nationality independently predicted severe malaria
β’ A major surge in malaria cases was observed during 2024β2025, highlighting ongoing regional vulnerability to outbreaks

Strengthened surveillance systems, early outbreak detection, targeted screening for high-risk populations, and continued clinical preparedness remain essential to sustain malaria control efforts in Saudi Arabia.
