Independent Commission on Assessment in Primary Education

In the Commission’s survey, ¾ parents and teachers thought there should be no government tests in schools.

Other changes, such as phasing out the SATs, should be done over a longer period of time through close collaboration between teachers, researchers and policy makers.

Meaningful change will only happen when policy makers accept that the current system needs wholesale change to deliver the broad rich education that teachers and parents want and children need.

We have met with experts and we’ve consulted widely with parents and teachers to produce recommendations that are based on evidence not ideology that will better serve children’s learning.

We’ve looked at many of the problems with the current education system, most worringly, the potential negative effects on children’s wellbeing.

Mary Bousted, Joint General Secretary NEU, says: "When we survey teachers, they’re very clear that the current testing arrangements narrow the curriculum, lead to teaching to the test, and don’t help children learn. So they’re clear and that comes out in this report".
