🧮 Making maths visible

I’m a big believer in clear, explicit modelling in maths, especially my deaf learners.

Using the Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract approach helps children see the journey from doing maths, to seeing maths, to understanding the abstract symbols.

For deaf children, clear visuals are so important. We can’t rely on incidental listening or explanations that happen around the classroom. What I model needs to be visible, clear and meaningful.

I love using my flip chart to model each step carefully, keeping the visuals uncluttered and making the mathematical thinking visible.
It’s not about making the maths easier. It’s about removing barriers so children can access the concept and understand the ‘why’ behind the maths. 💛

💜✂️ 15 inches of hair. One very special reason. 👑

I’ve done it again! After growing my hair for another two years, I’ve taken the plunge and cut off 15 inches to donate to the Little Princess Trust. 💇🏻‍♀️💜

And this one feels extra special because this is the FOURTH time I’ve done it! 🥹❤️

For the last several years, I’ve been growing my hair and donating it every two years. It’s become a little tradition that I absolutely love — grow it, cut it, donate it, and start all over again! ✂️🌱

My hair will be used to help create a real-hair wig for a child or young person who has lost their hair through cancer treatment or another medical condition. 👑

It feels like such a big change every time I cut it, but knowing that my hair can help someone else makes those 15 inches completely worth it.

Hair grows back. Confidence and feeling like yourself can be much harder to replace. ❤️

So here’s to my fourth donation, another 15 inches, and another little piece of me going on to do something wonderful. 💜

Thank you for hosting a wonderful team event allowing visitors to create their own drawings. Tactile drawings / graphics are raised images designed for people to feel with their fingers, allowing and individuals to understand shapes, textures, and information. Tactile drawings support creativity and social inclusion by providing tools for learning. I had a go at drawing the logo! It got me thinking about our children and how I can incorporate tactile drawings + images into my practice with children.
