🕷️ The spiders have been busy!
📚 Using favourite books (The Very Busy Spider was read, and read, and read in our house!) to explore nature works brilliantly.

👂Children decide to eat based on sensory information.
👃Your child will be somewhere on the sliding scale of being very sensitive to sensory input or constantly needing to seek it. This will impact their food choices.
👅 Getting interested in your child’s sensory preferences can help encourage them to become more adventurous with food. There are many ways outside of meals that you can do this.
🖐For example, your child may avoid certain textures of food. To help them develop an interest in a variety of textures, we need to expose them to how those feel in their hands before they will feel safe enough to put them in their mouth. Mud kitchens and other sensory play are a great way for them to explore. You can encourage them by using items they like playing with such as toy cars driving through shaving foam or sand or crunchy leaves.
👀 All senses are involved in decision making so get curious and you’ll be better able to support your child on their eating journey.

🤓 I find it useful to think of boundaries in 3 categories.
✋The non-negotiables
Like ‘Hold my hand when we cross the road.’ I’m willing to uphold these with great patience and determination. They’re decided through careful consideration and modified as the kids grow and develop.
📺 The semi-flexibles
Such as screen time limits that might flex for a family movie. I’m open to a request for flexibility but I’m the one who decides!
🛝The in-the-moments
Classic example “We’re only staying 45 minutes in the park”. These require thinking on the hoof and you’ll need to decide if you’re co-creating or dictating the limit.
Boundaries help kids feel safe and cared for so they’re worth investing energy in.
They work best when there is:
💚 Clear communication
💚 Curiosity when they’re not adhered to
💚 Empathy when they upset your child
💚 A firm, kind and consistent approach
