Picture of the Week: by Noelle (age 7) from Detroit

Our picture of the week was inspired by the story: Anansi and the Talking Watermelon and drawn by 7 year old Noelle from Detroit in Michigan. I love how bright your painting is, and particularly like the way you’ve painted elephant’s trunk and the cheeky little monkey hanging from the tree. And I think that's Anansi hiding inside the juicy watermelon, and tricking monkey and elephant into thinking that the watermelon is talking. What a scamp Anansi is! Well done Noelle for capturing that trickster story so perfectly.

This week's storyteller: Alton Takiyama- Chung

Japanese-Korean storyteller Alton, grew up with the beliefs, customs and magic of the Hawaiian Islands. He tells stories from Hawaii, East Asia, and also ghost stories. Some of his most popular tales on Super Great Kids' Stories include: Punia and Kaialeale, The Luminous Pearl, and Mujina the Faceless Ghost.

Alton has been featured at the Timpanogas and many national and international storytelling festivals from Asia to Europe and the Caribbean. He is the editor-in-chief of The Story Beast, a storytelling e-Publication (storybeast.org), is a former chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Storytelling Network (NSN), and the Organisation of US Storytellers. This week Alton tells two tales from Korea: 'The Magic Spring' is an upbeat tale about an old couple who discover a magical stream which transforms their lives - and 'The Story Bag' is a slightly dark tale about what can happen when we don’t look after our stories!

Wow! look at this fantastic picture of the green witch in the story, Finn McColl and the 7 Helpers drawn by 8 year old Esmeralda who lives in Melbourne, Australia. Thanks for sharing it with us all!

This was a story about bravery, a daring rescue and a scary witch! I love all the imaginative details you’ve included in your drawing - her green skin and straggly hair, her sparkly eyes and the spider swinging from her pointed hat - brilliant!

Happy listening and drawing too! Story Owl

6 year old Montgomery from Melbourne in Australia has sent us 2 fantastic drawings - one of the giant in Finn McColl and the other of the monkey in Anansi and the Talking Water Melon.

I love the way you’ve shown just how enormous the giant is standing beside Finn who is looking so terrified. I can hear how deafening the giant’s roar is too!

What a mischievous looking monkey climbing and swinging through the trees and I especially like his pink tongue! Perhaps he was hoping for a juicy slice of water melon?

Thanks for sending us your pictures. Story Owl

Hi to 6 year old Julian from Queens, NYC in the US. He was inspired to create Bob, a monster of his own after listening to The Belly Button Monster.

What a super great idea and I love all your imaginative ideas - his yellow skin, spiky hair, bright red face with bulging eyes and enormous hands - all the better for catching people who get in his way! Perhaps you could make up a story about Bob to tell to your family and friends?

Happy listening and thanks for sending in your drawing. Story Owl

Hi to 5 year old Arlo from Kilkenny in Ireland who likes listening to the stories in the car with his brother Robin.

Thanks for sending us your brilliant drawing of a friendly ogre - it’s so imaginative! I love its red ears, spiky hair, orange mouth and the wings on its yellow legs! I wonder where it flies off to? Lots of adventures I’m sure!

Perhaps you could write a story about them and share it with all your friends at school?

Have a happy term! Story Owl

9 year old Mika lives in Jersey in the Channel Islands and is a huge fan of Supergreat Kids’ Stories and she’s been enjoying them since she was 3 - hurrah!

Thanks for sharing your brilliant drawing of the story Why the Rattle Snake Rattles And How Snakes Got Their Poison with us all. You’ve drawn the rattle snake so carefully that I can almost hear the rattling sound coming from its tail, warning anything approaching it to ‘back off’! I love its fangs and forked tongue too flicking in and out too.

Enjoy all the new stories! Story Owl

7 year old Jamie lives in Edmonton, Canada and has shared her amazing drawing of the monster in the story The Old Woman Up The Hill. I think it’s a fantastic illustration so thanks for sending it in.

Imagine being the old woman who opened her front door to find this terrifying green skinned monster standing there with it long fangs, scaly skin, glowing red eyes and sharp claws ready to eat her up- yikes! But she was quick thinking and her clever plan involving chocolate biscuits and cabbages saved her, didn’t it?

I’m looking forward to seeing more of your imaginative artwork, Jamie! Story Owl

5 year old Dusty has been enjoying the summer holidays in Cornwall, here in the UK listening to Supergreat Kids’ Stories in the car with her family. They have also been retelling some of the stories round their camp fire - that sounds such fun!

Thanks for sending us your brilliant drawing of Grateful Statues. I love all the different woven hats they are wearing that the kind man gave them so they could keep warm on that cold snowy mountain side!

Happy listening and drawing too! Story Owl

Valentín from Chile has sent us his fantastic drawing of The Ghost Of The Bloody Finger. The ghost looks really scary floating above the terrified man lying in his bed screaming AAAA! I think I’d be hiding under the bedcovers!

Such a dramatic and imaginative drawing - thanks for sharing it with all of us. Story Owl
