Last week, the weather did its absolute best to bring the country to a standstill. Trains were having a wobble, people were melting into pavements and every conversation started with, “It’s too hot…”
Thankfully, one thing didn’t grind to a halt: as part of our work experience week ( , we headed over to Noclor to give our young people some insight into what research actually is, to challenge the myths and to explore why it really, really matters for all communities, but especially for those who are often ‘left out’ for a variety of reasons.
The young people weren’t quite sure how three hours talking about research was going to go, but they were looking forward to it.
They needn’t have worried.
Within minutes they were asking questions, challenging ideas, making connections and throwing themselves into every activity the team had planned. It never once felt like a lecture but instead was a micro conversation and activity that reflected what the process from research study conception through to delivery was like.
They were even given funds to resource the research approach they chose. Some of them did NOT want to spend all of the money granted to their projects but when the team explained that in the real world, if you don’t spend it, you lose it, they re-thought and the money was promptly allocated lol
The success of the session lies entirely down to the thought that the whole Noclor Primary Care team put into the session. The activities were creative, genuinely age-appropriate and, most importantly, they never underestimated our young people.
A huge thank you to Noclor for opening your doors, sharing your expertise and putting so much care into creating an experience that our young people will remember. Also… for somehow managing to keep everyone engaged for three hours on one of the hottest days of the year. That might be the most impressive piece of research of all!!
