Special Educational Needs Teacher – September 2021 - London – Autism/ASD/ASC

Are you an experienced and qualified Teacher looking for a new challenge or career progression?

Have you always had a passion and talent for teaching children with additional needs?

I am actively recruiting creative and engaging teachers for a SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) school in SE London. I am looking for teachers who have a passion for working with SEN/Autism. The school is looking for a number of teachers to join their permanent staff team on a full-time basis this September. The school has two sites with excellent facilities to support children with Autism, there are opportunities for both primary and secondary teachers.

Brief overview:

SEND/Autism Teacher
Teacher pay scale
Location: SE London
SEND school: Pupils have a primary diagnosis of Autism or Asperger’s, aged 11-19
September 2021 start date
Ability to engage children with SEND is essential.

About the role of Special Educational Needs Teacher:

As a Special Educational Needs Teacher based in this SE London SEND school, you will be responsible for delivering creative and engaging lessons for small classes of children with a primary diagnosis of Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome. Working as a Special Educational Needs Teacher, you will understand that academic development is only possible when you address the primary need first. You will work with the school's multidisciplinary therapy team to ensure the best holistic development possible. These opportunities will suit teachers who have a passion and natural ability to engage children with a SEND diagnosis. You will have the ability to create interactive, therapeutic, and meaningful lessons, helping children reach their full potential.

Requirements for Special Educational Needs Teacher:

To work as a Special Educational Needs Teacher, you will ideally hold QTS or QTLS or have relevant experience as a teacher. Solid experience working with highly vulnerable children, pupils with a diagnosis of Autism/Asperger’s, challenging behaviours, and anxiety disorders is beneficial but we want to hear from ALL teachers. If you are interested in a teaching approach that is holistic and therapeutic but don’t necessarily have this experience yet, please still enquire.

The school

Based in SE London, the school is close to public transport links and also offers parking for those who drive. There are excellent facilities in place for the children with SEND to learn, including a large PE hall, and outside learning space. The school staff are a happy and vibrant team, they love what they do and love the fact that no two days are the same! For teachers coming to this school with no SEND school experience, there is excellent training available, although SEND experience is preferred. As long as you are an open minded individual who embraces challenges and is looking for an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the lives of pupils faced with individual needs, this could be your chance to make a real difference. The school is especially interested in teaching staff that have experience in teaching English and Maths either at upper KS2 or at KS3 level.

Are you an experienced band 6/7 Occupational Therapist looking to become part of an Inclusion Service multidisciplinary therapy team?

Do you have a strong paediatric OT background and passion for paediatric support?

Are you skilled at delivery of OT training, modelling, programs and equipment/adaptation recommendations?

PS Inclusion are looking for a band 6/7 OT to become part of a multidisciplinary therapy team as part of an Inclusion Service. The opportunities here are flexible and could suit a permanent F/T OT, permanent term time only OT, or someone looking for more flexible locum work.

School based occupational therapists focus on addressing educational needs to promote students' participation and performance in school. This may involve focusing on sensory and functional needs, as well as social skills. As an OT based in SEND school settings, you will look at the whole child, tackling individual tasks, helping students find ways to do the things they need and want to do. You will liaise closely with the multi-disciplinary clinical team to provide an intensive treatment service. You will engage the children and young people within the school in innovative, helpful therapeutic and meaningful activity, supporting them in learning and reaching their full potential.

Duties for this Paediatric Occupational Therapist will include:

- Provide a high quality, school-based
Occupational Therapy Service to
children, their families, care givers, and
schools.

- Assessment, strategies, training,
modelling, programs and
equipment/adaptation
recommendations.

- Consult school staff such as Senior
Leaders, SENCOs, and class teachers to
support the integration of OT principles
into the curriculum.

- Identify training needs amongst school
staff and parents.

- Contribute to Annual Reviews as and
when required.

- Measuring and evaluating outcomes.

- Contribute to the creation of service
development outcomes.

- Creating resources.

- Providing strategies through coaching.

To work as a school based Occupational Therapist, you will need to hold a recognised Occupational Therapy degree, be HCPC registered and a registered member of the British College of Occupational Therapists. You will need solid paediatric OT experience, ideally working with a broad range of SEND to include Autism.

Imaginative: It’s certainly worth keeping in mind that students may become discouraged during their treatment session so it’s important to remain imaginative to create a welcoming and accepting environment.

Collaborative: It’s important to remain open to collaboration with your students’ team.

Versatile: You will be based across a case load of schools and provisions for SEND, age ranges from primary to secondary with a broad spectrum of additional needs.

Patient: Students may react to their OT sessions differently or could even feel defeated at times. In any case, remaining patient to keep them assured of their progress and maintaining a positive attitude will help to encourage the student during their sessions.

Communicative: Keeping open communication with your students will help to offer them clarity and comfort around their progress, ultimately leading to a sense of encouragement. As well as communicating with students, OTs should possess strong communication skills in order to adequately explain updates to the students’ team members such as other therapists, teachers, and parents
This is a band 6/7 OT role and will require experience due to the autonomy of the role.

Working for this inclusion service comes with great opportunity for CPD and access to very specific training from well known experts in the field. Working with a range of schools means that you will acquire skills and experience across a wide range of SEND including but not limited to PD, LD, SEMH, SLCN, MLD, PMLD, Autism, and Access Needs. The work they do is essential and you will have an opportunity to be a part of something very special!
