Dear Parents and Carers,
We understand your ongoing concerns about this week's incident at school and would also like to thank you for your outpouring of support as well. We know that the incident has been difficult for all involved and we are very sorry for the worry this has caused.
We want to be really clear that we are dealing head on with the issues that our parents have raised with us so far and will continue to listen and act as needed; parents are welcome into school any morning this week to talk to us, as well as after school on Friday from 3pm onwards, where we will have tea, coffee and cake waiting for you. Our staff are committed to having a constructive conversation and to working together, in partnership with our parents, to ensure Duke's is the safe and successful school we all want for our learners.
The safety and security of our students and staff is our absolute priority. We are working hard to restore confidence to our school and community environment and we are very grateful for your engagement and support while we do this.

We understand that some parents may be gathering outside the school on Friday. Instead of parents needing to stay outside, we'd really like to welcome any parents into Duke's at the end of the day, to listen to your concerns. Our staff are committed to having a constructive conversation and to working together, in partnership with our parents, to ensure Duke's is the safe and successful school we all want for our learners.

We understand the ongoing concerns about yesterday's incident, and would also like to thank our community of parents for your outpouring of support as well. We know that the incident was upsetting for all involved and we are very sorry for the worry this has caused.
Please note that there is a huge amount of misinformation on social media and amongst our local community. These rumours are causing further anxiety.
We'd like to set out the following:
🟢 There were no weapons seen by any adult or the police, although we understand that some students report having seen a weapon. We take these allegations very seriously and are investigating this fully.
🟢 Nobody was injured with a bladed weapon, although one student was injured with a ring.
🟢 The incident was between a small group of Year 10 and 11 students, which unsettled the school because it happened at break time. There was a further larger group of students that made the situation more difficult to manage, refusing to follow instructions and looking to cause additional disruption, which added to the feelings of confusion and anxiety. This kind of behaviour has no place in our school, and we are investigating this group of students and their part in the incident.
We want to be really clear that we are being transparent about the incident yesterday and will deal head on with the issues that our parents have raised with us so far.
The safety and security of our students and staff is our absolute priority. Some initial first steps we have taken include additional security measures at the start of the school day; increased police community support at the start and end of the day; assemblies and lessons with all students about safety and behaviour; and meetings with parents to listen to their concerns and make a plan to resolve these.
We will endeavour to keep you informed of all our next steps and ensure that we are sharing accurate and timely information with you. We know this is a difficult time, and we are working hard to restore confidence to our school and community environment. We are very grateful for your support while we do this.
10/03/2025
We have sent out a message to all our parents and carers, and would ask them to continue to check their school app for further updates. We'd like to thank everyone for your patience whilst we continue to investigate and resolve the incident that took place at our school today.
We want to be really clear although we are aware of rumours of weapons being used, no members of staff saw any weapons and no knives were involved in the incident.
We understand that any incident such as this causes concern, and as you can imagine, our focus today was on getting students out safely and dealing with the situation as quickly as possible. We want to reassure everyone that the safety and security of our students is our priority, and we will be updating our parent community later on the additional safety measures we are putting in place and the support that will be available for their child when they return to school.
10/03/2025
We can confirm there was an incident at the school today, where a relatively minor scuffle between two students escalated quickly and other students became involved. We want to be really clear that any reports of a knife being used are categorically untrue. We have been in contact with all our parents to let them know about the situation, and we also contacted local police, who attended and helped our staff to deescalate the situation - we are grateful for their support.
We understand how worried many parents and carers have been and would like to reassure them that the safety of our staff and students is our priority in school. That is why we decided to send our students home this afternoon (10 March), to restore further calm. Our focus now is on taking steps to ensure an incident like this does not occur again, and on making sure that our students can get back to their learning as quickly as possible. The school will be open as normal tomorrow and will be in touch with our parent community with further updates.
