Eco-friendly baby care company Pura has announced that it is partnering with Plymouth-based MLA College to offer 10 fully funded bursaries and scholarships in sustainability for business people who want to drive positive change for the planet.

The distance learning MSc Sustainability in Practice, undertaken by Research Project with first enrolments in September 2022, is designed for senior to mid-management level. The college is specifically looking for leaders, managers and individuals in charge of teams or workplace sustainability who are eager to learn, develop and drive organisational change. The course involves a 12-month research project that will explore participants’ workplace or community challenges relating to sustainability and ask them to create viable solutions.

On Monday 27th June, Prof. Basak Akdemir Director of CIFAL City of London was invited to address the distinguished guests at the House of Lords for ā€˜An Afternoon Tea Talk: The Bangladesh Story’.

The event was hosted by Sadia Muna Tasmeen, High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the United Kingdom.

The afternoon tea was also attended by Sheikh Aliur Rahman Board Member of CIFAL City of London, and Chief Executive of the London Tea Exchange and Dr. Abdul Momen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh.

A new CIFAL Centre for the City of London.

On 15th June 2022, UNITAR, BAU Global and their Academic Partner, MLA College officially inaugurated CIFAL – City of London. Alderman Vincent Keaveny, the Mayor, City of London/City of London Corporation welcomed Mr. Nikhil Seth Assistant Secretary-General, United Nations Organization, Executive Director, UNITAR and Mr. Alexander Mejia, Director of UNITAR’s Division for People and Social Inclusion, and Head of the CIFAL Global Network, to Guildhall, City of London.

CIFAL City of London is part of an international network of 25 UNITAR affiliated centres which make up the CIFAL Global Network (CGN). The vision for CIFAL City of London is to support local, regional and national leaders in acquiring skills that would allow them to advance sustainable development in their communities and ultimately improve the quality of life of their citizens. CIFAL City of London will specialise in sustainable transportation, with a particular focus on training for the maritime sector as well as Social inclusion, Gender equality, Environmental sustainability, Maritime-related affairs.

Lord Mayor of London Vincent Keaveny said: ā€œWe are delighted to welcome the first CIFAL centre in the UK to London. Like its counterparts around the world, it will play a significant role in the transition towards a more sustainable and inclusive economy, here in the UK and beyond.

ā€œThe centre will be a beacon of knowledge, helping to drive progress on issues such as sustainable transportation, gender equality and environmental sustainability, while its focus on maritime-related affairs is very apt given London’s long history as one of the centres of world shipping.ā€

The newly appointed Director of CIFAL City of London, Professor Basak Akdemir, who is also the CEO of MLA College, the academic partner for the CIFAL (MLA College’s Bachelors’ degrees and Masters’ degrees specialise in Sustainability and Maritime education), said: ā€œI now have the great honour and privilege of becoming the Executive Director of CIFAL City of London, the city being one of the world’s most prominent centres of influence on the world economyā€.

CIFAL – City of London will specialise in sustainable transportation, with a particular focus on training for the maritime sector as well as social inclusion, gender equality, environmental sustainability and maritime related affairs.

On the eve of the official inauguration of CIFAL - City of London, dignitaries including Mr. Nikhil Seth,Assistant Secretary-General, United Nations Organisation, Executive Director, UNITAR and Mr. Alexander Mejia, Director of UNITAR’s Division for People and Social inclusion, and Head of the CIFAL Global Network have met at the Ironmongers Hall in London.

The inauguration dinner was hosted by the newly appointed Director of CIFAL - City of London, Professor Basak Akdemir, who is also the CEO of MLA College, the academic partner for the CIFAL.

The International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in the City of London (CIFAL City of London) will be launched on 15th June 2022. The vision for the CIFAL is to support local, regional and national leaders in acquiring skills that allow them to advance sustainable development in their communities and, ultimately improve the quality of life of their citizens. CIFAL City of London will have a particular focus on the Maritime sector.

CIFAL City of London's mission is to offer training opportunities and exchange of best practices, tools and strategies in partnership with local and regional authorities, international organizations, private sector and civil society; to support the improvement of decision-making processes through leadership of the implementation of innovative solutions that strengthen capacity at the local level, to make decisions and develop innovations which encourage sustainable development which in turn will facilitate the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.

Geographical Scope: London, UK and International

Thematic Areas:

The capacity development activities will focus on the following areas:

• Economic development
• Social inclusion
• Gender equality
• Environmental sustainability
• Maritime-related affairs;

CIFAL City of London will aim to support existing activities, develop new activities through the organisation and hosting of the following types of activities on a bespoke basis or in partnership:

a) Face-to-face or online training sessions related to the established areas in the
Thematic Areas above
b) National, regional and international events related to the role of local
authorities to achieve global sustainable development goals at the local level;
c) Knowledge sharing and technical support to UNITAR, other CIFAL Centres of
the CIFAL Network; and
d) Visits of international delegations
