The Snowdonia Space Centre is home to the Space Technology Test Centre (STTC). The Space Centre boasts a wealth of testing facilities, including a laboratory, featuring a vibration table, aerostructures rig, centrifuge, and a thermal-cycling vacuum chamber in a clean room that simulates the space environment to test whether the systems can withstand the extreme space conditions. The Technology Cen

tre also features a rocket test stand and variable inclination rail launcher. The Snowdonia Space Centre, officially launching in May 2025, will be a testing hub and educational centre for the UK Space Industry. The location of the Snowdonia Space Centre is unique, offering access to an immediate Special Use Airspace (SUA) around Llanbedr Airfield approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to support the ongoing development of novel aerospace systems in the UK.

Great news coming from the UK Government this week: UK invests in homegrown space tech to boost national resilience 🛰️

'British businesses, universities and researchers will receive access to more than £62 million in government funding to develop homegrown space technologies, boosting the UK’s national resilience and helping protect its independence in a strategically vital sector.

The funding – unveiled on Monday 20 July at Farnborough International Airshow by Space Minister Liz Lloyd – will support new satellite communications systems and space innovation projects, helping turn early-stage ideas into commercial products, strengthen the UK’s ability to monitor and protect assets in orbit, and build a more resilient domestic space sector.

Building domestic capability in these areas is vital to strengthen the UK’s national security, economic resilience and ability to act confidently on the world stage.'

Today marks the 57th anniversary of Apollo 11's moon landing 🌖

Here are some key facts about the moon landing which remain impressive to this day 👇

🌘 Roughly 20% of the world's population watched humanity's first steps on the Moon—making it one of the largest live TV audiences in history.
🌗 Apollo 11 reached the Moon in about 4 days, launching on July 16th and landing on July 20
🌖 The astronauts spent 21 hours & 36 minutes on the lunar surface
🌕 The crew returned with 21.5 kg (47.5 lb) of moon rocks, which helped to transform lunar science

Manchester University at Snowdonia Space Centre 🚀🛠️

This month we welcomed Manchester University to Llanbedr for its Aerospace Field Course. Second year Manchester Uni aerospace engineering students and students taking part in voluntary aerospace engineering societies at Manchester were invited to gain hands-on experience. This included:

🟩 Flight safety - learning aerospace flight safety culture and applying it to the flight testing of drones and rockets
🟩 Aerospace Systems - learning to build vehicle systems from component parts and verify performance in flight
🟩 Experimental methods - gaining experience in obtaining and analysing flight test data from crewed and uncrewed test flights
🟩 Personal development - broadening skills and experience through participation in extra-curricular activities

Students launched the world's first rocket made out of cardboard for a fully recyclable airframe. The test rocket barrel, fins and internal structure were all made out of corrugated cardboard and the nose was 3d printed. The rocket was 2m tall and weighed 4.5kg 🚀

As part of the event, local year 9 & 10 students from Ysgol Ardudwy joined us to build a large structural aircraft out of foamboard using craft tools and techniques ✈ This was a great opportunity for students to see what a career in aerospace could look like, hopefully motivating them to seek a further education in STEM.

This event was a brilliant opportunity for students to gain valuable hands-on experience and to see their projects come to life!
