We joined the music, dancing and celebrations at Liverpool's Africa Oyé festival this weekend, where Professor Rachel Tolhurst and her International Public Health team worked with Pamoja Communications to run a creative public engagement stall.

We loved meeting so many festival-goers who got involved in collage-making and thought-provoking conversations about climate change, sharing their experiences and ideas while learning how research can help tackle global challenges such as climate change.

With great weather and a vibrant atmosphere, it was a brilliant weekend of community engagement, creativity and learning. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, got creative and contributed their thoughts and ideas.

Ebola disease survivors bring unique lived experiences that can help communities better understand Ebola treatment, address fears and misconceptions, and encourage timely care-seeking during outbreaks.

A new article co-authored by LSTM’s Dr Shevin Jacob highlights the critical role that Ebola survivors can play in strengthening trust, improving community engagement, and supporting outbreak response.

Using oral history methods, researchers collected testimonies from survivors in Uganda and Liberia, exploring their experiences of illness, treatment and recovery. The study found that survivors naturally serve as community witnesses, trusted messengers and advisors, and should be recognised as knowledge holders and valued partners in preparedness, response and recovery efforts.

This work formed part of the Wellcome-funded Evaluation of Clinical Management Guidelines for High Consequence Infectious Diseases programme, led by the University of Oxford in partnership with Walimu Uganda and LSTM.

We recently held a launch event for our new Human Challenge Facility, the largest academic inpatient isolation facility in the UK. Developed by LSTM in partnership with NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group , The Pandemic Institute and the University of Liverpool, and working alongside the NIHR Liverpool Clinical Research Facility, it cements our place at the heart of UK infection research and Liverpool's place on the global map.

This is what regional ambition looks like: faster vaccine and diagnostic development, high value jobs, and a world leading research network anchored here in the city region.

On Wednesday 8 July, Professor Kondwani Charles Jambo will deliver his inaugural lecture at LSTM.

In Accidental Scientist, Immunologist by Choice: Building Science, Scientists and Systems for Impact, Kondwani will reflect on a journey that began in Malawi and led to a career at the forefront of immunology and global health research. He will explore how curiosity about the immune system evolved into a commitment to developing scientific talent, strengthening research ecosystems and creating opportunities for others to thrive.

Alongside his scientific work, he is a passionate advocate for mentorship, leadership and capacity strengthening, driven by the belief that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not.

What has economics got to do with global health?

Quite a lot, as Professor Eve Worrall demonstrated in her inaugural lecture at LSTM.

Drawing on nearly three decades of experience, Eve explored how economics shapes global health policy and practice, reflecting on the people, projects and partnerships that have influenced her career.

From malaria early warning systems to health financing and resource allocation, the lecture highlighted how economic evidence can help decision-makers make better choices and deliver greater impact.

It was also an opportunity to celebrate Eve's contribution to global health and her leadership in establishing LSTM's Global Health Economics and Financing Unit.

Huge congratulations to Professor Hilary Ranson, our Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research Culture and Integrity, who has been awarded a CBE in the King's Birthday Honours for services to global health and equity in science.

For almost 30 years, Hilary has been a leading figure in vector biology, recognised internationally for her work on insecticide resistance and the control of mosquito-borne disease. She has led major research collaborations across Africa and Europe and worked with the World Health Organization and national governments to ensure scientific advances deliver real-world impact.

Alongside her research, Hilary has trained and mentored hundreds of researchers, many now leaders in their own right, and has been a tireless advocate for equity, inclusion and excellence in science.
