Fire: As an introduction, I wont talk about the historical significance of fire, or it's application throughout Bushcraft and Survival. That will come later. I will talk of it's relevance as a human, a serving Soldier and a Veteran. For us, the fire holds other meanings and reflections. Ask any Soldier about 'Hexy TV' and they will follow with tales of hardship, commerarderie and humour. As the fire draws you in, the past is brought forward and future potentials are revealed. I would much rather stare into the flame, than at a TV. When shared as a community, the common bond it creates, will inspire the sharing of truths, secrets, fears and aspirations, quicker than any other scenario I know of. Listen to the flame 🔥🙏

The 'Priorities of Survival' are a hand rail YOU may follow should the worst happen, and YOU find yourself isolated in a wilderness, survival situation. What the situation is, will depend on your environment, level of training and your mental and physical preparedness. The order will change as quickly as the situation does. Each, in and of itself is a huge subject which you could dedicate a lifetime to perfecting. A Sapper, must have a working understanding of each to operate, complimented by an understanding of field engineering, physics and soldering skills. As this page grows, I hope to educate and inspire you to pursue your own adventures.

A Sapper needs to be versatile, to adapt and over come adversity. This applies equally to Survival. We cannot just rely on tried and tested solutions, as they do not apply in every environment, whether that be in the garden, or on operations.

Here, I'm experimenting for the first time with flint, steel, tinder fungus and jute rope. Worked a charm!

From first strike, to ember and flame in 2 min 10 secs 💥🔥🏕️

"SERE Team 6" put in a sterling shift today in the sweltering heat, teaching knots and lashings, tying paracord bracelets and dishing out servings of edible insects to the denizens of Ripon. A great day had by all. 🪓 🔥 🦗

10/05/2025

Today was an absolute pleasure, representing the Defence, Survive / Evade / Resist / Extract (SERE) capability at the 'Ripon Weekend' military show. Loved meeting all of the new aspiring adventurers and survival enthusiasts. The edible insects provided by Eat Grub went down a storm! Much more to follow from Sapper Survival School 🪓 🔥
