සම්ප්‍රදායේ නිහඬ හඬ

මම ලිවර්පූල් හි වසර 20 ක් පමණ ජීවත් වී ඇති අතර දැනට බැංකු අංශයේ සේවය කරමි. ඡායාරූපකරණය බොහෝ කලක සිට මගේ ආශාවක් වූ අතර එය මම විනෝදාංශයක් ලෙස අධ්‍යයනය කරන්නෙම්. ප්‍රවීණ ඡායාරූප ශිල්පී අනුරුද්ධ ලොකුහපුආරච්චි මහතාගේ මඟපෙන්වීම යටතේ එය වඩාත් බැරෑරුම් ලෙස වර්ධනය කිරීමට පසුගියදා මට අවස්ථාව ලැබුණි.

මම මෙම ඡායාරූපය ලබා ගත්තේ අගෝස්තු මාසයේ ලිවර්පූල් හි ඡායාරූප රූගත කිරීමකදීය. මෙම දර්ශනයට මුලදී මා ඇදී ගියේ විචිත්‍රවත් කොළ පැහැය, සංකීර්ණ යකඩ රටා සහ පබ් එකෙන් පිටත ලී බැරල් මේසයයි. මෙය ලිවර්පූල් නගර මධ්‍යයේ හදවතේ ඇති අයර්ලන්ත බාර් එකක් වන අතර අයර්ලන්ත ධජයේ එක් වර්ණයක් වන කොළ පැහැය රූපය තුල කැපී පෙනේ. අයර්ලන්ත සංස්කෘතිය තුළ, කොළ පැහැය නියෝජනය කරන්නේ අයර්ලන්තය, ස්කොට්ලන්තය සහ අයිල් ඔෆ් මෑන් යන උරුමයන් තුළ ගැඹුරින් මුල් බැස ඇති Gaelic සම්ප්‍රදායයි. මෙම සම්ප්‍රදාය හුදෙක් වර්ණයකට වඩා වැඩිය-එය මෙම ජාතීන්ගේ අද්විතීය ජීවන රටාවේ පිළිබිඹුවකි, ඔවුන්ගේ ආහාර, බීම, සංගීතය සහ සමාජ සිරිත් විරිත් එයට ඇතුළත් වේ.

ජනෙල් සහ මුහුණත අලංකාර කරන යකඩ රටා වික්ටෝරියානු යුගයේ මෝස්තරය පිළිබිඹු කරන අතර, පබ් එකට ඓතිහාසික චමත්කාරජනක හැඟීමක් එක් කරයි. මෙය අනෙකුත් දෘශ්‍ය අංග සමඟ ඒකාබද්ධව, නවීන නාගරික පසුබිමක අයර්ලන්ත උරුමය සංරක්ෂණය කිරීම පිළිබඳ පොහොසත් කතාවක් නිර්මාණය කරයි.

Where History Meets the Horizon

During a recent practical photography workshop in Liverpool, I chose a photo taken by one of my students, Muditha de Silva, for analysis. This is because the photo beautifully captures the interplay of urban history and modernity in Liverpool, where I live. It strikes a balance between nostalgic and dramatic tones.

The moody, subtle low-key lighting, with dark clouds dominating the sky and cool colors in the upper part of the frame, creates a dark, gloomy, mysterious, and dramatic mood. The clouds, hovering between light and dark, lend the photo a melancholic and nostalgic atmosphere. The warm glow of the streetlights adds a sense of historic warmth to the modern dockyard, contrasting with the chill of the wind blowing across the Irish Sea from the north. The foreboding sky contrasts with the dense buildings and the calm water, creating emotional tension.

Liverpool is a city deeply rooted in maritime history, and its docks are a crucial part of its identity. The contrast between old, red-brick warehouses and modern structures, such as the Liverpool Museum, speaks to the viewer about the city’s transformation over time. The historic architecture of the Royal Liver Building and the dome-shaped structure in the background add grandeur, reminding the viewer of Liverpool's past glory as a busy port during the British Empire.

The nostalgic feeling is amplified by the cobblestoned road and old-fashioned street lamps, evoking a time when the docks were central to the city’s economic and cultural activity.

The River Mersey on the left symbolizes Liverpool’s link to the rest of the world. Its presence in the photo serves as a reminder of the city’s global reach and maritime significance. Anchored in the river, a ship connects the modern tourism economy to the traditional shipping industry, reinforcing the blend of old and new. The river’s positioning also subtly draws the viewer's eye to Liverpool’s historical ties to international trade and immigration.

The photograph captures both the archaeological and architectural layers of the city. The combination of modern and old elements highlights Liverpool's evolution, from its industrial dockside heritage to its current role as a cultural hub. The preserved red-brick buildings reflect an appreciation for the past, while the modern museum represents Liverpool’s forward-looking vision.

Natural light, diffused by clouds, creates a dramatic mood. The photographer has balanced the exposure between the dark clouds and the light foreground, ensuring no area is overexposed or underexposed. The rule of thirds is used effectively, with the pool and path leading from the lower right towards the modern structure in the center, and then toward the iconic buildings in the background.

Depth of field is used to ensure both the foreground and background elements remain sharp and in focus, which is essential in architectural and landscape photography. A slight HDR (High Dynamic Range) effect seems to be applied, giving the clouds an ultra-realistic, almost painterly quality, with a careful balance between bright highlights and dark shadows. The slightly upward angle adds prominence to the buildings in the background, making them appear more impressive and significant in the overall composition.

The composition is dense, with lines in the foreground (such as the stones and dock chain) drawing the viewer's attention to the focal points: the modern building and the historical background. Foreground elements, like the dock and chain, help frame the shot and add depth to the image. The combination of old and new structures provides a narrative of Liverpool’s transformation and enduring legacy. Despite its richness, the photo remains visually balanced without overwhelming the viewer.

This image represents how modern cities like Liverpool are in constant dialogue between their past and future. Capturing the historical significance of the docks while highlighting the new architectural additions, the photo offers a contemporary view of a city deeply rooted in its history. පසුගියදා කෙළඹ ඩී ජේ ඒ පෙරේරා කලාගාරයේදී SEQUEL Collective සමූහය විසින් සංවිධානය කල ඡායාරූප ප්‍රදර්ශනයක් පැවත්විනි. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ඡායාරූප කලාවට නව ප්‍රවිශ්ඨයක් ලබා දීමට උත්සාහ කරන කණ්ඩායමක් ලෙස මා ඔවුන්ව හඳුනාගෙන සිටිමි. කුඩා කලා කණ්ඩායමක් වන ඔවුන්, සම්ප්‍රදායික දෘශ්ඨිමය සහ ආකෘතිමය සීමාවන් ආවරණය කරගෙන ඇති ඡායාරූප කලාවේ සැබෑ ගතිකයන් ස්පර්ශ කිරීමට දරන උත්සාහ මගේ සිත් ගනී. මෙම ඡායාරූප ප්‍රදර්ශනය මට භෞතිකව නැරඹීමට නොහැකිවුවද, ප්‍රදර්ශනයේ ආකෘතිමය හැඩ තල සහ ඇතැම් ඡායාරූප සමාජ මාධ්‍ය ඔස්සේ දකින්න ලැබුනි. ඒ හරහා මා දුටු අයුරින්, ඇතුලත ඇති ඡායාරූප වලට සමපාත වන ලෙස අධියාථාර්වාදී ආකෘතියක් තුල ප්‍රදර්ශනය ඉදිරිපත් තර තිබුනි. ඒ තුලින් ප්‍රදර්ශන ශාලාවට ඇතුළු වන ප්‍රේක්ෂකයන්ගේ මනෝබාවය අනතර්ගතය තුලට ඔවුන් ගෙනගොස් ඇත.

පලමු පෙල ඡායාරූප දෙක

ලොව ප්‍රථම ප්‍රවෘත්ති සහ යුද ඡායාරූප ශිල්පියා ලෙස සැලකෙන රොජර් ෆෙන්ටන් ක්‍රිමියානු යුද්ධය ආවරණය කිරීමට සූදානම් වූ 1855 සිට මේ වසරට වසර 167ක් සපිරේ. රුසියානු අධිරාජ්‍යයා වත්මන් යුක්රේනයට මායිම්ව පිහිටි කලාපය යටත් කර ගැනීමට උත්සාහ කරන විට ෆෙන්ටන් ඔහුගේ සහායකයා සමඟ ක්‍රිමියාවට ගියේය.

ක්‍රිමියානු යුද්ධයේදී දරුණු සටනකින් පසු කාලතුවක්කු බෝලවලින් පිරී ගිය පාළු භූ දර්ශනයක් පෙන්නුම් කරමින් ෆෙන්ටන්ගේ වඩාත්ම කැපී පෙනෙන රූපවලින් එකක් වන “මරණයේ සෙවනැල්ලේ නිම්නය” 1855 අප්‍රේල් 23 දින ගන්නා ලදී.

2022 දී යුක්රේන ප්‍රවෘත්ති ඡායාරූප ශිල්පී මැක්සිම් ලෙවින් කියෙව් නගරය අසල යුක්රේනයට රුසියානු ආක්‍රමණය ලේඛනගත කිරීමට යමින් සිටියේය. එහිදී ඔහු රුසියානු කාලතුවක්කු ප්‍රහාර වලින් මරණයට පත් විය.

A Moment in the Kitchen

I'm usually an early riser, but today, I woke up quite late. Even when I wake up late, the bright sunlight of a summer morning already pours into the house from everywhere, including the windows. It's a sign of a refreshing summer day, hinting at an inviting environment outside that makes me want to go out with my camera. I came to the kitchen to drink water, and this scene inspired me to take a picture. I adjusted the camera settings to black and white mode and maintained the frame ratio. I captured this photo with my mobile phone.

I want to help you understand the factors that motivate us to photograph the things we see in our daily life or to perceive something ordinary as a work of art. By recognizing these factors, a photographer, painter, or poet can turn the most mundane things they see every day into something more interesting. The design is an expression of the artist's personality, ultimately becoming what we call a work of art.

Let's explore the factors that motivated me to take this photo.
