It is that time of year when things are starting to get busy and a 5pm finish may feel like a distant memory.

As a groom you might not expect to always finish on time, but if you do work later or do extra hours, for example when you’re at a competition, it is important that these are recorded and remunerated, (or be able to take time off in lieu (TOIL).

❓ What is overtime?
For employees that have set working hours, overtime usually means any time worked beyond these hours. Normal working hours are the hours fixed by your employment contract.

❓ What counts as work?
• Time spent travelling for workers who have to travel as part of their job, e.g. travelling to shows and that includes when sitting in the horsebox and not driving.
• Time spent actually working abroad.
• Early starts or late finishes carrying out the usual duties of your job.
• Time spent on call at the workplace (e.g. for foaling duty).
• Any other time that is treated as ‘working time’ under a contract.
• Job-related training.
