Judges said the Materials Innovation Factory is exactly the sort of thing the Liverpool economy needs to continue its strong growth. The facility, which cost about £29m to build, represents a unique public-private partnership between Unilever and the University of Liverpool. Its facilities will enable the discovery of new materials that could have the potential to save energy and natural resources, improve health or transform manufacturing processes.
Our Urgent Care and Trauma (UCAT) Centre project at Aintree University Hospital was also shortlisted as a finalist.

BAM is building the new £23 million Materials Innovation Factory for the University of Liverpool.
We are demolishing an existing lecture theatre and then building the four storey BREEAM Excellent rated Material Innovations Factory, which will focus around a full-height atrium that connects research laboratories and offices. 95% of all the waste produced during construction was diverted from landfill - we even managed to upcycle some wooden cable drums and pallets into furniture for the University of Liverpool campus with the help of students!

Throughout the project our site team have hosted 10 site tours and presentations for 120 architecture students from the University of Liverpool!

1st year Architecture students from Liverpool University visited our site. Our Project Manager gave a fantastic presentation talking about what is being built, the timescales, who is involved and health and safety on site.

We carried out a traditional topping out ceremony on site last week to celebrate reaching the top of the building!
The University of Liverpool’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janet Beer, Dr Cameron Jones, Port Sunlight Site Director at Unilever, the Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, Caroline Cowburn, Regional Consultant at HEFCE and Ged Flanagan, our BAM Construction Director for the project all took part in the ceremony.

Our other shortlisted entries included our UTC@MediaCityUK project, CSR Award and Nina Martyn for Construction Trainee of the Year - well done to the team!
