It was a pleasure to be able to present a number of awards this week to the amazing support staff and managers of Expect Limited at The Grand Southport. While Social Care in the UK is often overlooked in comparison to the Health Sector, it is social care which is essential for huge numbers of people in our communities living a quality life, and in delaying or reducing future health needs. Great support workers and great care providers are an invaluable asset who thoughly deserve events like this. Well done everyone!

Do your staff use manual handling equipment to provide care and have they been trained in the use of this equipment?
This area can be a bit of a minefield for employers considering the range of equipment commonly in use but if you think your team might need an update then get in touch.

A bit of info: the law requires employees to be trained in a Safe System of Work (MHOR 1992). This is usually a step by step procedure in how to accomplish a task with a person and any equipment in as safe a way as possible. Training needs doing on any new task and any new equipment as the law requires retraining when there is a 'significant change in the manual handling operations'. The HSW Act and regulations 10 and 13 of the Management Regulations also require you to provide your employees with information and training and again MHOR states that 'particular regard' must be paid to this.
