Working with a student who was expelled from school a while ago and has bounced around different PRUs, never settled and been totally turned off education.
I thought it would be really hard to do GCSE work with him but wow, was I wrong. What a writer. I really love our English sessions and seeing him want to talk about books and writing is just brilliant.
This was a little five minute write he did based on a picture of the American West with no help from me.

Great news from the resits this week! I started with these two fabulous students in October and they went from a 3-4 on third attempt and from 3-7!

One more day until the end of term!
I have been SO bad at posting on social media this term (mainly because it's been a busy one) but here's a poster to show that I have one space left in my Wed night 7.30pm class and from Jan - Feb half term we are looking at key themes in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde so if you're studying this, come and join us!
Have a great holiday!

An epic 10 hour day of revision done! Good luck to everybody who has resit exams tomorrow. It's really hard to move between a 3 to a 4 in 6-8 weeks, which is the average time spent on tuition but with hard work and revision, it's possible!
I have a few extra 1-2-1 spaces now on Monday and Wednesday at 4pm for anybody who needs History or English tuition. There's still space on Wed at 7.30pm for the AQA GCSE group and AQA History is starting from Jan as well as some English Literature groups.
DM for details or to request a group session.

Last lesson of this block with my fabulous Year 9 students from Harrow Beijing! Today we are going through the feedback from assessments. They may be in Year 9 but we still work on IGCSE exam skills that they will need in Year 11 and all four of them have scored a Grade 5+ in their exams alreadyπ€©.
They're off to do 8 weeks of Geography now before coming back for History in the New Year. π

β New slot available! β
4 spaces for a new 8 week GCSE AQA Germany: Democracy and Dictatorship module available.
Although I'm full for 1-2-1s, I have a student who's keen to revise this module and is looking for others to turn it into a group session (Β£100 per month for weekly sessions).
Times and dates tbc. Our current slot is Monday at 4pm but she is flexible.
Knowledge revision and LOTS of exam practise to aim for that Grade 9!
DM if interested!

Some lovely feedback. Sometimes it only takes a few sessions for everything to 'click' and a student to be motivated to self-study.
I have space in half-term for History mock revision if anybody wants a few one-off sessions.

Back to uni!
30 years later.... a lot has changed (including the hairstyle). Last time I started, the internet had not long been invented (I was astounded when somebody explained that I could send a message to a friend and they could go and pick it up from a computer in the building); I had to hand-write essays; I'd only seen mobile phones on TV yuppies and a pint in the student union was 99p.
Luckily, it's only one day a week over 3 years so I can still run my tuition classes and Lauren has plenty of spaces left to pick up any new English students. If anybody knows a qualified History teacher who is interested in tutoring, please let me know as I am full this year and starting to have to turn away interested clients.
(No comments on that middle name please!)

π One thing that I am noticing about GCSE English teaching is the number of Year 11s who really struggle with basic grammar. Comma splicing and run-on sentences are very common. Some students genuinely don't know where to put a full stop and those who don't read for pleasure struggle even more.
π I went back to basics with this student and revisited the KS2 curriculum. It's not perfect but look at the difference after one lesson! The student was able to correct a paragraph with no punctuation.
π There's no shame in going back to something that a student might have forgotten from years ago...I don't think I can remember all of the Year 4 Maths curriculum as it's been that long. In a class of 30 in school it's difficult to be able to pause, reflect and revisit.
π There are some useful Oak Academy lessons on this if parents want to help their children with writing. It's not the most exciting of topics but it's so important. I'll post a link to one you can use below.
π The benefit of tuition is that you can keep try and try again until you succeed!
