Self-medication is well documented in animals, and as my chickens aren't free-roaming all the time I have added a self-selection station for them. They also get fresh vegetables, peas and sweetcorn in addition to their layers pellets.

What else should I add to their self-selection station?

Fantastic to have participants work with two of our newest rescue hens, Kelis and Bjork, at Level 1 Chicken Workshop.
The girls previously had zero training. It was amazing to see how quickly they learned to get onto arms to get to the training table and how they stayed and trained when they could have easily wandered off. They also were taught to identify one particular colour, blue for Bjork and purple for Kelis and successfully identified their colours each time.

Participants worked on their shaping skills through PORTL style games and had a refresher on different types of training.

There are two spots left for the August 2nd workshop and dates and details to be announced soon for general public Chicken Training Experiences.

Two weeks and three days since we brought home our six new rescue hens from and they are significantly braver!

When we first got them any movement from us would cause panic and scattering of hens. Now they are beginning to trust us, it's beautiful and so rewarding.

You heard it here first!

One of the tasks in Level 2 Chickens Workshop this weekend was to teach a chicken to go through a hoop. Then ring a bell. Then get on a platform. Then chain all the behaviours together!

Here's Sarah with Whitney working on chaining the behaviours together.

Making friends with these new girls as they settle into life with us. Our existing chickens keep coming and sitting with them, the other side of the mesh. I wonder if they are just curious or if they recognise these birds have had the same start they did, laying eggs for commercial use.
It shocked me that these hens came from a free range, organic farm yet are in such poor condition, tatty and skittish. Our first hens came from a caged farm and were in a similar state but I (perhaps naively) expected free range organic to have better conditions.

Always wanting to be the star of everything, because she's flocking fabulous, Lil Kim is the oldest chicken in the gang, the most experienced at training and the only one who demands to be the centre of attention.
