Happy Birthday to one of the greatest guitarists ever, Allan Holdsworth!🎸Today would’ve been his 78th birthday.
Born on 6 August 1946 in Yorkshire, England. Allan was known for his advanced knowledge of music, through which he incorporated a vast array of complex chord progressions and intricate solos. His unique legato soloing technique stemmed from his original desire to play the saxophone. Having been unable to afford one, he aimed to use the guitar to create similarly smooth lines of notes.
His unconventional chord voicings, searing solos, incredible speed, and passionate melodic phrases make him one of the most exceptional guitarists in history.
After relocating to London, guitarist Allan Holdsworth played with Tempest, Soft Machine, Tony Williams Lifetime, and Gong throughout the 1970s, contributing to numerous notable recordings.
He launched his solo career with 1977’s Velvet Darkness and continued releasing influential albums over the next few decades. His most recent works include 2000's The Sixteen Men of Tain and a 2005 career retrospective, Against The Clock. In 2003, he toured and recorded with Softworks, a band featuring alumni from Soft Machine.
He died from cardiac arrest on April 15, 2017 at his home in California.
Let's take today to celebrate the man who changed guitar forever! 🎸
