“..….it is the courage to continue that counts….”

A mantra I have learned to live by over the years, seen on the wall of my training venue up in York last week… it caught my eye as I was leaving and I stopped halfway through a doorway to take this picture. It was absolutely the message I needed to see.

So how do we integrate different training methods to maximise engagement..? We recognise ‘where they’re at’, what their needs are and perhaps even what their ‘fears’ are… I like to use variations on this randomised selector task, especially when I suspect some time will elapse between moments of physical intervention (possibly when I expect they’ll be successfully managing the conflict). It usually wins maximum engagement points and staff describe enjoying it. So rather than boring them to death with show and drill, they get to mix it up a little with this. Every time it’s done successfully the learner not only increases their retention but actively influences their colleagues retention also! One staff member today at a Primary school in Birmingham said that they had done this ‘type’ of training previously but that it hadn’t been like this (said in an enthusiastic manner)…. a lovely team of most of whom were either or DSLs. Some complex needs here but thankfully only from a couple of the children on roll.

Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE) was the topic of conversation today in Liverpool with staff working with vulnerable looked after children. Lots of valuable insights for them and some hard hitting real life stories from a child’s perspective. The team felt suitably enlightened with a slang term quiz, replete with ‘fastest finger first’ buzzers 🚨

Spent a few days recently helping my friends at GoodSense Training deliver their Conflict Management courses at Keele University just outside Stoke. I particularly enjoyed coaching the student midwives (pictured) who were fully engaging with their scenario dealing with a complex conflict situation - note the added visual stimulus one student decided to add; thus making their training experience richer. I overheard one student as they left saying “that was the best lecture I’ve ever been to” - ☺️

I’ve had a few engagements recently in care settings of various types and yesterday I was lucky enough to be able to take a team through some ‘real world’ issues in their real environment. This is a not yet occupied bedroom where we went through some ideas about dealing with physical aggression / violence in way that helped the staff to ‘click’ with the context more readily. The team were able to identify flashpoints and things to consider depending on context… something we always have on our minds when delivering these sessions. I really enjoyed seeing the pennies drop here. We don’t always get this opportunity but when we do, it’s usually an amazing learning experience.

Hi 👋🏻 I haven’t posted an update for a while because I’ve been so busy… 34 sessions since last posting in May 2nd has seen me travelling all over the UK ~and~ Ireland (twice) across differing sectors. I’ve just spent time in the North East delivering an amazing 2 day Lone Workers Personal Safety course to staff dealing with ex-offenders. The level of experience in the room was huge - these staff know their stuff! Shaping the scenarios for them was also interesting because their experience/competence allowed me to make it more complex for them at times without massively increasing their cognitive load….and of course, being northerners, the warm, friendly natures of the team shone through. Even when some of them have had ‘epiphany’ style moments whilst going through the content, they’ve done it with good humour and i truly believe that they will go away and think about what they’re doing. In the words of one of the ladies: “eeee, I canne believe wa we’ve gone through these last two days”

Recently I was approached by a local scouting group regarding delivering a ‘self defence’ type workshop for them. Tonight was the night and although I cannot share any pictures of the kids, I can share that one scout said to one of their leaders that tonight was the “best lesson” he’s had. Nothing makes me happier thinking that a little of my knowledge and simple skills may help someone to stay a bit safer at some point… before the session I had the opportunity to throw a few ‘axes’… this was what the cubs were doing (who knew they did this sort of thing!!) before we started. Great fun!!

Today was all about global delays, ehcp’s, adhd/autism/audhd, sensory modulations, absonding, climbing, hitting, kicking, spitting, snotting and all things in between! Just a normal day at work then! This team have previously used a widely used training that teaches teams. It was fair to say they much preferred this approach… so much so, the principal said that she wants me back to teach ALL the staff my thoughts on behaviours and conflict management strategies, especially those things that might work where ‘traditional discipline’ typically doesn’t - oh and the strategies for the staff themselves! And Suzie managed to have a go at the wall push too!

It feels like feet haven’t touched the ground much recently, from Bristol for a week teaching Spire staff, Council staff in Chorley, GPs in Oldham, School staff in Lewisham, Foster Parents in Devon and Children’s Home staff in Liverpool… the feedback has been great and some fantastic skills have been levelled up somewhat. Yesterday as I read the feedback form handed to me a lady said, I had this training only about 3 weeks ago at another company but it was NOTHING like this… “oh, how so…?” I asked. She said “well, this has been interesting and very interactive [whereas] what we’ve had before was just boring! He was boring, the slides were boring and dated with references that were close to ten years old” I would hope that no one ever describes my training sessions as boring. 😜

Start with a welcome, try to communicate, physical if you absolutely need to…. I had a lovely day today working with a small team at a deaf school here in London working with two interpreters is helpful but delivering to people that cannot hear you is a challenge for the trainer in the first instance. They do have some physical challenges currently being presented to them from children, some similar to a mainstream school and some perhaps a touch nuanced by the specificity of a child’s ability (or inability) to hear them. Dealing with deaf children that present us with complex challenges still require things like risk assessments and coming to the party with our understandascope but there’s also the issue of staffing. It’s a tad different in a deaf school because if we want to both hold safely AND communicate there needs to be three members of staff. A conundrum many mainstream teaching staff don’t even need to contemplate because they can simply talk to a hearing child. Today was more about me taking the time with this team to understand their issues and give them tools to deal directly with that, rather than a ‘bish bash bosh’ through a tirade of things they have little to no use for. They thanked me for that approach at the end and although at times like this I sometimes leave a place thinking ‘should I have taught them ‘that’ as well’. It was clear today that they were happy with their training experience. Clarity from me and my explanation about the legal aspects was praised and they also thanked me for some ‘thought provoking’ approaches to consider for a ‘complex’ child. All in all, a really good day. Back again in May for round two!
