Hello June 🌿☀️
Spring term group piano lessons may be over, but we're looking forward to a summer filled with music, creativity and plenty of piano-playing.
We're taking a moment to enjoy the sunshine before summer workshops begin and a new season of musical adventures gets underway. 🎹

Ever since we started , every Intro course has ended the same way… with Lean On Me. 🎵
Our arrangement - adapted from the Bill Withers classic - is something special.
The chorus is built entirely around our ten finger starting position, making it the perfect way for our students to bring together everything they’ve learned. Moving the left and right hand sequentially, using crotchets, minims, quavers, semibreves, crotchet rests… and a gorgeous C major chord to finish. Because we teach chords too!
Watching the budding musicians play this and see them realise what they’re capable of never gets old. We are so proud of every single one of them. 🎹
Oh… and it’s Scarlett’s favourite song, so what’s not to love! ⭐️

We didn’t start for the thank you cards… but when we receive them, they mean the world. 🎹
This beautiful card from one of our students is proudly on display and is a daily reminder that what we’re building here is so much bigger than lessons.
We’re laying the foundation for a lifelong love of music. And that makes everything worth it. ❤️🎶

Our group piano lessons always start with asking our kids what they've been listening to this week...it's great to kick off with a musical conversation to spark different interests and inspiration 🎶

We believe it's so important to teach creativity and musicality at Viva Piano in our group piano lessons. Nurturing the kids musical spirit is just as important as learning the theory basics 🎶

Laura here with a little reflection 🎹☀️
We get asked about private lessons a fair bit. And for a while the answer has just been… no. Kids, work, building Viva Piano and everything in between, there’s not a lot of time left over.
But also, if I’m really honest, I’ve felt a bit nervous about it given I haven’t taught 1:1 before.
So when a parent asked me if private lessons was something we could explore, I had to say no to regular lessons.
Buuut there was a little opportunity as it was the Easter holidays and I offered to do a couple of one-off sessions instead. And… they were lovely and eye opening in the best kind of way.
We did some games exploring pitch and rhythm, the child showed me their sight reading skills (impressive by the way 👀), we looked at some new sheet music and let’s just say the Wellerman sea shanty has been living in my head rent free ever since.
What did I take from it? I loved the planning and following the child’s lead, adapting and taking our time. I hope the child took away something new too.
And it’s built my confidence a bit more than I expected for future 1:1 teaching.
Thank you to the parents for trusting me. They gave me an opportunity which doesn’t come along too often and it was an opportunity that pushed me ever so slightly outside my comfort zone.
So maybe regular private lessons aren’t the answer right now, but one-off sessions in the holidays? It might be something to explore. Watch this space I guess 😊

Come with me to teach our group piano lesson (yesterday) 🌸
Spring term has well and truly started now and we're seeing some incredible progress from our musicians 🎶 Laura and I are often having to think on our feet to find new ways to challenge them! 💪
Just me on my tod this week but we had a fantastic time - first chord for Intro and in Level Up, we took on Taylor Swift - a very tricky two-handed melody 🎹

A little shoutout to Letchworth today. The blossoms, the flowers, the bountiful trees… our Garden City is looking beautiful right now 🌸🌷☀️
For fellow runners🏃♀️, I recommend adding in an extra lap of the Common, even if you walk it. And, if you’re feeling brave, take out your headphones. It’s amazing how much more you take in.
Here’s a few pics from this morning’s run and I just thought we needed a moment to appreciate our town in all it’s Spring glory.
