Particle Mini Series - Part One - は

Partials are grammatical elements that help explain the meaning of the sentence.

は is often learnt first as we use it when introducing ourselves.

私 は ベリー です。

It is important to note that when part of a word, は is pronounced as ‘ha’, but when used as a particle it is pronounced ‘wa’, the same as わ.

は marks the topic of the sentence. In the example 私 / わたし / I is the topic, so は follows immediately after. It can be thought of as meaning ‘as for this’, or ‘speaking of’

私 は = As for me

ベリー = Berry

です = the copula, equivalent to am or is.

私 は ベリー です
As for me, I am Berry.

これ は カレー です。
As for this, it is curry.

ロボット は 医者 です
As for Robert, he is a doctor.

Vocabulary:
Doctor - いしゃ - 医者

こんにちは､皆さん。私はベリーです。
宜しくお願いします。

Hiragana:
こんにちは、(みな)さん。(わたし)は(べりー)です。
よろしくおねがいします。

English:
Hello everyone. My name is Berry.
It’s nice to meet you.*

Whilst we translate this as ‘nice to meet you’, the meaning is closer to ‘please be kind to me’.
