Some books are written from the head.
Little Hum was written from my heart.

It began with a feeling.

What do children need to hear? What are they longing for? And how do we help them begin to understand who they are and why they are here?

Little Hum is, in part, a story about a longing for adventure. But it is also about something much bigger.
The word ‘Hum’ comes from ‘human’. We are born with so much possibility, but there is still so much of being human for us to discover.
And perhaps that is true for all of us. We all have longings. We all wonder, at different points in our lives, what we are here for and where we are going.

I wrote Little Hum as a starting point for those conversations.
A simple story that might open the door to a much bigger question:

Who are we, and why are we here?

I’m a teacher and never thought of myself as a writer until a much acclaimed author ‘reprimanded’ me recently saying, ‘you’ve published six books! You’re a writer!’ My writing has always been caused by a desire to share knowledge or expertise in areas that are generally missing in society. I want to make life and learning much easier for children and parents and believe that writing helps in this process.

Have you ever wished school had taught a little more about life?

This book began with a conversation after a television producer read one of my articles about the realities of the school day. Teachers do an incredible job, but there simply isn’t enough time to teach children everything they need to know about the world around them.

He said something that stayed with me: I needed to teach them how.

So I wrote 100 Things to Learn Before You’re 10.

It’s a practical guide filled with ideas, conversations and activities to help children discover the things that often don’t fit into a busy curriculum – from understanding the world and different cultures to developing curiosity, confidence and essential life skills.

It isn’t about adding pressure to parenting, it’s about making everyday moments richer, helping children ask better questions and giving families simple ways to learn together.

If you’ve ever thought, “I wish I’d learned that at school,” or “I’d love to teach my child that, but I’m not sure where to start,” I wrote this book for you.

Let’s tell every child - in case they don’t know….nature makes each flower fascinating and beautiful every time. That’s how nature does it. It is the same with with each of us - made fascinating, intricate and beautiful we must aim to do that in everything we do…that’s a lesson for your children. Nature gives you the evidence. Their instinct gets it.

He got himself in there, he can get himself out - words a head teacher spoke when a child panicked and screamed from the top of the climbing frame. He succeeded. And so did the squirrel. Both underwent some reflective thinking and personal development. No squirrels - or children - were harmed in the taking of this photo.
