This week brings pupil sessions, new bookings, meetings and networking all with one purpose at the heart of everything I do:
Supporting children to become confident, capable readers.

Behind every session is careful planning, personalised resources and a commitment to understanding how each individual child learns best.

Every session is carefully planned around the individual pupil with the right resources, the right level of challenge and plenty of opportunities for hands-on, multisensory learning.

SESSION SEQUENCE BUT NEVER ONE SIZE FITS ALL

Behind every Reading Doctor session is careful planning, purpose and preparation.

Our session sequence gives each lesson a clear structure from handwriting and word work, to familiar reading, a new book, technology and celebrating success.

But the important part is this…
The sequence is a framework, not a script.

Every pupil is different.
Every learner has different strengths, needs and barriers.
And every session is adapted accordingly.

I choose the resources, activities and multisensory approaches that are right for that individual child because meaningful learning happens when children are taught in a way that makes sense to them.

That might mean hands-on word work, letter formation, reading with a tracking tool, building words, using sound mats or simply finding a different way to make something click.

Structured. Personalised. Purposeful.

Sometimes progress looks like something very simple…

A child following the words independently.
Finding their place on the page.
Reading a sentence with a little more fluency.
Or simply feeling confident enough to keep going.

The little moments might not always look like huge milestones, but they matter.

Our work aligns closely with EHCP outcomes, SEND inclusion priorities and preventative intervention.

From early reading support to Functional Skills pathways for older learners, our Reading Doctors provide structured, evidence-informed teaching that helps children not just catch up… but thrive.

LETTER FORMATION MATTERS

One of the things we’re working on in the Reading Room is letter formation particularly the letters b and d.

For some children, b and d can easily become mixed up, and this can be a common difficulty for pupils with dyslexic traits.
That’s why we don’t simply keep saying “remember which way round it goes.”

We make it hands-on and multisensory.
In this session, we used:
Finger tracing
Sand writing
Visual letter formation prompts
Repeated practice

The aim is to help the child develop a stronger memory of how the letter is formed and where each part goes.
And those little moments of practice really do matter.
Small steps. Repeated practice. Growing confidence.
At The Reading Doctor, we look at the individual child and find approaches that help learning make sense for them.

SUNDAY TIME TO REST, READ & RESET

Sunday is for slowing down.

After a busy week of school, learning, clubs, homework and everything in between, children deserve a little time to simply switch off and be themselves.

And what better way to wind down than with a good book?
Reading on a Sunday doesn’t have to be about targets, levels or how many pages they have read.

It can simply be:

🛋️ Curling up somewhere cosy
📖 Choosing a book they actually enjoy
👨‍👩‍👧 Sharing a story together
💭 Getting lost in a wonderful imaginary world

No pressure. No testing. Just reading for pleasure.
Even a few quiet minutes with a book can create a lovely moment of calm before Monday arrives.

So tonight, let them get cosy, choose their favourite story and read simply because they love it.

Rest. Read. Reset.
Ready for another week. ✨

RESOURCE SPOTLIGHT ONE Of OUR SOUND MATS

Another one of my favourite resources in the Reading Room!

Our Sound Mat is such a useful tool for helping children make those important connections between sounds and letters.

It gives pupils a visual reference they can return to while they’re working supporting them to recognise sounds, recall graphemes and become more independent in their learning.

And I love that it can be used in so many different ways…

It’s one of those resources that becomes a familiar and reassuring part of a child’s learning toolkit.

Word work is such an important part of building confident readers and writers.In the Reading Room, we use our specialist resources to make word work practical and engaging , from building words with magnetic letters to practising letter formation on our handwriting boards and exploring sounds and spelling patterns.

Using different ways to practise the same learning helps children make those important connections between sounds, letters, words and meaning.

Behind every session at The Reading Doctor is lots of thought, planning and preparation.
Today is all about preparing personalised learning for my pupils choosing the right resources, activities and strategies for each individual child.

From sand writing and handwriting practice to whiteboards, phonics resources and hands on activities, every session is carefully planned around how that child learns best.

Because one size definitely doesn’t fit all.
I want every pupil who walks into my Reading Room to feel that their learning has been created for them building their skills, confidence and love of learning one step at a time.
