Working from the cafe in my village last week I overheard a mother telling her friend how she had been told that hiring at home childcare for her child when she returned to work made her not a 'real parent'...

And although she mentioned it as a 'load of rubbish' kind of fact the sentiment, still made me feel sad for her....because why in 2026 are we still putting parents down for needing support?

Society needs to remember that we were never meant to bring children up alone. Families have always had a 'village' to support them with their children, but with many families these days not having family nearby, sometimes that village comes from the childcare that you choose.

Lots of my clients at the moment are looking for a part-time nanny, while most of my candidates are looking for a full-time role…

It’s clear that on both sides of the scale things need to add up. Candidates need a role that can support them sustainably long-term, and families are needing to watch where their money is going in this cost-of-living crisis. So, I can clearly see how we’ve reached this impasse.

In this climate of high expenses, both families and candidates need to be flexible to considering the wonderful hybrid options available that make nannying roles more and more possible:
Whether that’s families teaming up with their friends or neighbours to offer Candidates a full-time role across two (nearby) homes, mutually creating opportunities with both childcare and housekeeping responsibilities to make full-time employment more sustainable or Nannies considering the potential of working term-time for one family and holidays for another.

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut of sticking with what you know – of only looking for one specific thing, because that’s what you have done before, but keeping your eyes open to new opportunities, and flexible role proposals, may lead to an outcome better than you expected! and while these roles aren't for everyone they are what will allow the industry to continue to flourish long term.

The importance of consideration of hybrid solutions for Nannying makes me reflect on the time I spent working nanny-share for two of my wonderful families in London:
I looked after both of their boy’s full time with my time and energy split across the two households, where the parents had been friends for 10+ years. As a result, both families paid less for their childcare than they would have paid on their own, but I got paid more total than I would have got from one family alone. And of course, there was the added bonus that their little boys got to grow up together! It was an arrangement that worked well for us all for a number of reasons.
And while, when my boss initially suggested it, I thought it was ‘not for me’ and certainly not what I expected my nannying career to look like, I’m so glad I gave it a go. Despite its challenges I look back at that time as one of the greatest successes of my career.

Parents – how many times do you get to the beginning of a new week feeling calm, collected and organised? Often?

Or is usually a last-minute scramble to pull things together without giving up your precious weekend time to weekday admin?

Week 6, Activity 12

It wouldn’t be the end of summer without a special activity to celebrate the fun you’ve had and of course to ring in the new school year and all the fun still to come, and in my opinion, there is nowhere better to end than with a cosy family film night.

Now I’m not saying it’s anything new, but in my personal opinion it is an underrated activity, and if you want something that is sure to be a hit with the children (and maybe even earn you some fun parent/nanny points) then a movie night is definitely the way to go.

Now it’s the end of the summer, which either means you’re tired of organising things by now or that you want to go all out for the last time, and I’m pleased to say that both approaches work very well here - If you have the time and inclination then a makeshift home cinema and little paper tickets will always be a win, but if all you can manage is a good movie, a big pile of blankets and an even bigger pile of snacks then you’ll be just fine.

Just take the moment this coming weekend, to enjoy one last fun family moment before the chaos of a new school year begins again!

Week 6, Activity 11

Junk modelling is one of those activities that most of us haven’t done since reception, but that is so good for children’s creativity, without requiring half of Hobbycraft to be bought in the process!
If you don’t know what I’m talking about when I say Junk modelling let me try and explain it to you – to put it simply junk modelling is allowing your child (or charge!) to use the contents of the recycling bin to bring their creativity to life – there is no aim and no correct process, there is just creativity.

Give it a go this week – pull out all the cardboard and random bits of hard plastic destined for the bin, grab some Sellotape, or glue or both, and bonus points if you have some stickers, or sequins kicking around to add some fun to your creations! Try and let your children take the lead on this – but if you need to then give them a few little suggestions on things to make; it could include a rocket, a house, a car. Anything goes!
