Meet Discovery Digital Champion Steve Jones 👋

Steve is a Maths teacher and Lead Practitioner at Uppingham Community College and is now in his 14th year working at the school.

This year, he is also part of Discovery’s network of Digital Champions, exploring how technology and AI can be used purposefully to make learning more inclusive and accessible.

For Steve, that could mean using text-to-speech tools to support pupils with dyslexia, captions for pupils with hearing impairments, translation tools for EAL learners or adapting digital resources to suit different visual and processing needs.

He’ll also be exploring AI, digital assessment and creativity tools - but with an important focus on finding out what genuinely works.

Throughout the year, Steve will test different approaches in his classroom, gather feedback from pupils and share his experiences with colleagues across Discovery.

And he’s just one of the Digital Champions we’ll be following this year - we look forward to further introductions!

✈️ We're off to Sweden!

Next month, three members of the Discovery team will head to Stockholm for an exciting opportunity to see how technology is being used in Swedish schools - and bring that learning back to our classrooms here in Leicestershire.

Discovery has been given three fully-funded places on the Skolon Ed-Venture: Sweden 2026.

Mike Sanderson, our Chief Technical Officer, and Jo Stone, our PedTech Lead, will be joined by one of our brilliant 36 Digital Champions - and applications for that third place are currently underway!

The trip will include visits to three Swedish schools, workshops and conversations with education and technology experts.

For us, though, this isn't about using technology simply because it's available.

As Jo explains: “We want technology to have a clear purpose. It should make learning more accessible, give teachers more time to teach and help every child participate and succeed.”

And that's exactly what our Digital Champions programme is about - helping us explore how technology, AI and blended learning can remove barriers and create even more inclusive classrooms.

💙 Exciting things are happening across Discovery Schools Academies Trust as we prepare to launch our latest Digital Champions programme.

Over the next year, 35 colleagues from across our community of primary, secondary and specialist schools will work together to explore how technology can make learning more engaging, more personalised and more accessible for every child.

This incredible programme, funded through the apprenticeship levy and delivered in partnership with leading digital skills provider Primary Goal will be the next step in building on years of investment in educational technology and digital innovation across our community of schools.

Discovery has been championing the effective use of technology in education since 2018 and is now home to 15 Microsoft Showcase Schools, reflecting our long-standing commitment to innovation that enhances teaching and learning.

We can't wait to share the Digital Champions' journey over the coming months and show how they're helping to shape the future of learning across Discovery Trust.
