Blue Plaque for Gertrude is still outside Bracken Edge school.
Do you know the first Black headteacher in Leeds?
Gertrude Maretta Paul. Born in St. Kitts, came to England in 1956.
She taught at Cowper Street School and in 1976 she was appointed as the city's first Black head teacher.
Gertrude was one of the founders of the West Indian Carnival and a Commissioner for Racial Equality.

This is NOT about politics. This is about doing our part to help.
Any child aged between 4 to 16 years can come between 5pm to 6pm from Saturday 24th October 2020 to Sunday 1st November 2020 (8 days in total) to collect a free chicken or vegetarian biryani. We are closed Mondays.
Just turn up in a safe manner with an adult (if you are very young) and we will support you.
WE WILL DO OUR PART TO HELP.
PLEASE spread the word. This literally may be a life saver for some. And if you are a business owner please do consider doing this yourself. Good only begets good. We have to help each other during these very difficult times.
