Israel Campos (Luanda, 2000) is an Angolan writer and journalist whose work explores memory, history, and childhood. He is the author of the novel E o Céu Mudou de Cor (Kacimbo, 2023). His short fiction has received several distinctions, including the 43rd Prémio de Literatura Juvenil Ferreira de Castro (2025) and the Prémio Literário Imprensa Nacional/Casa da Moeda for his forthcoming collection Baloiço de Memória (2026). His work also appears in the anthology Instances of Exceptional Moments of Hunger (Narrative Landscape Press, 2026), developed through the CANEX Creative Writing Workshop led by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Campos recently co-edited Construir Amanhã Com Barro de Dentro – Vozes do Pós-Independência (Catalogus, 2025), a collection of short stories reflecting on the 50th anniversary of African independences in Portuguese-speaking countries, with contributions introduced by Paulina Chiziane and Inocência Mata.
As a journalist, he has reported for international outlets including the BBC, Voice of America, Al Jazeera, and The Wall Street Journal, covering politics, climate change, and contemporary Angolan society. His work has been recognised with the EU GCCA+ Youth Award for climate storytelling, the Prémio Liberdade de Imprensa (2024), and finalist nominations for the Free Press Award and Amnesty Media Award.
In 2023, he was invited by the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic to join the think tank O Futuro Já Começou, created by former President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, where he served until 2026. In 2026, he was selected for the highly competitive Jan Michalski Foundation Writers Residency in Switzerland, where he will spend three months in the summer developing new literary work.
He is currently a PhD candidate in Media and Communication at the University of Leeds, researching the postcolonial history of Angolan journalism. He holds a BA in Journalism from City St George's, University of London, an MA in Strategic Communication and Leadership from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, and a Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) in Lusophone Journalism (2025) from the Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon.
