Last month, our Year 8 Creative Project group enjoyed an exciting visit to Elementary Technology
They learned different roles within a creative technology workplace and explored the ‘experience centre’, filled with interactive games, whiteboards, and even podcasting equipment – which was a big hit!
As you can see, the students had a great time.

Last week our brilliant L2B students took part in a hands‑on heart dissection as part of their science learning. They explored the structure of the heart up close, identified key features such as the ventricles, atria, and major blood vessels, and deepened their understanding of how this incredible organ keeps us alive.
Our students showed fantastic curiosity, teamwork, and resilience throughout the session. It was amazing to see them making real‑world connections to their classroom learning.

Twelve of our students have made a fantastic start to their 10-week placement at Leeds City College (Quarry Hill campus). They’ve been working with the wonderful Art department and getting a real taste of college life - including enjoying lunch in the canteen alongside other students.
So far, they’ve explored a range of creative techniques, including still life drawing, monoprinting, and stencilling. It’s been great to see the students thriving in a new environment, getting fully involved in activities, and building their confidence.
Even more importantly, they’re starting to think and chat about their futures - exploring whether college could be the right pathway for them. Well done, college crew!

Over the Bank holiday weekend, Sunday 3rd May to Monday 4th May, the annual Cookridge Scarecrow festival is taking place from 12pm to 5pm across the 2 days. This involves local residents displaying scarecrows in their gardens.
A scarecrow trail and map can be collected from The Club House, Leeds Modernians, Cookridge Lane, Leeds, LS16 7ND. There will be entertainment and refreshments available at the Club House.
Lighthouse students have designed two fabulous happy school scarecrows and these will be on display at a resident's house in Cookridge during the festival. Look out for our display along the route and give us a vote!

At the start of the month, we celebrated National Careers Week! Here's a look at what we've been up to:
🎵 Launchpad music visit - we had a visitor come in to talk to our KS3 students about the huge range of careers within the music industry supporting our students to discover roles they didn't even know existed!
🎹 DIGIT Music visit - this company also spent time with our students, showcasing amazing assistive technology that makes music accessible for everyone.
📝 Real Job Applications – some of our students stepped into the world of employment by completing real job application forms, gaining valuable experience and confidence. They will have the opportunity to complete mock interviews later on in the year.
🧠 Assembly on Jobs & Neurodiversity – we explored how different brains bring different strengths to the workplace, followed by a ‘dream job’ activity where students shared their aspirations.
As a destination-led school, we are proud of the engagement shown by our students in thinking about their futures and look forward to continuing to support them as they explore opportunities, roles and next steps.
