Giving birth is a very physical process, as the muscles in the uterus contract to open the cervix, the pelvis makes space for the baby and the baby rotates down. However, it is a very mental process too and the brain plays a big part in the labour process and how you experience it.
When the mind is calm and relaxed, the body can work more effectively. Oxytocin is a key birth hormone, it is released much more easily when you feel safe, calm and supported. However, it is also a shy hormone. If the body feels scared, stressed and disturbed, oxytocin will drop, adrenaline will step in and interfere with oxytocin. The subconscious mind will also shut down the labour progress. It will try to keep us safe and as much as we try to ignore the observations and disturbances, the subconscious mind will always win. Oxytocin needs privacy and a calm, quiet environment.
This is the same as if we tried to go to the toilet in a public place without any privacy. The subconscious mind will not allow us to relax and do what we want to do.
Lack of privacy and disturbances are very common in hospital births. From consultants doing their ward rounds, other midwives coming into the birth space to do “fresh eyes”, to midwives taking over to cover break periods and shift changes, it’s a constant carousel of strangers coming and going. - not good for someone who is in labour!
This is why doing a hypnobirthing course during pregnancy can be so helpful. Not only will it create a positive mindset for birth, teach you about the mind, body connection and how to instantly get into your calm zone, even when external factors get in the way, it also helps you to make informed decisions and teaches you how to advocate for yourself and increase the chances of having a positive birth experience.
