A HUGE misconception many early childhood educators have is that they need to PLAN different activities every day for children to learn and meet their developmental goals, proving to the powers that be that they are doing a great job!
Here’s what ACTUALLY happens when you plan different activities daily:
▫️Children lose autonomy over their own learning.
▫️Activities are chosen by adults, not by the children themselves!
▫️Children don’t have time to practise newly acquired skills.
▫️ Children miss opportunities to build confidence and competence.
▫️Children lose chances to revisit and continue from where they left off during their last visit
Here’s what ACTUALLY happens when you create rich, powerful play spaces and embrace ‘in the moment’ planning:
Children engage deeply with materials, allowing for sustained exploration and discovery.
▪️They develop autonomy by choosing their own interests and directions for learning.
▪️Skills are practised and refined over time as they revisit learning at their own pace.
▪️Confidence and competence grow as children master challenges and celebrate their successes.
▪️Learning becomes meaningful, as children connect new experiences with relevant prior knowledge.
▪️Opportunities for social interaction flourish, enhancing collaboration and communication skills.
▪️Each day is unwritten, following the children’s interests, questions, and learning styles.
▪️Everyone ( children and educators) feels energised, motivated, and enthusiastic, having ownership over their day.
▪️Overall, children become lifelong learners, driven by curiosity and intrinsic motivation.

The truth is that children don’t all learn along the same linear path, nor can we predict or plan their learning journeys!
