Health and Social Care students at our Quarry Hill campus have been supporting new mums through an important project ๐Ÿ’™

Students are helping to create emergency welcome packs for new mothers who have experienced a cryptic pregnancy - a pregnancy that goes unrecognised by the person carrying the baby until the later stages of pregnancy or, in some cases, until labour begins.

The packs contain essential items including nappies, clothes and wipes.

The project was created by Yorkshire Ambulance Service crew member, Sarah Jones, and featured on ITVโ€™s Good Morning Britain and Calendar News.

Leeds City College will be taking over the project where our students will continue to contribute to creating the support packs while gaining valuable work experience alongside their studies.

Our in-house podcast produced by English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teachers has gone global ๐ŸŒ

The Radio ESOL podcast, which started as a platform for students to share their lockdown experiences back in 2021, has now reached over 100 countries worldwide.

As a result of the podcast, learners have improved their speaking and listening skills as well as grown in confidence.

One student, Islam Ali, said: โ€œThree years ago, I didnโ€™t have any confidence to speak English, but after participating in Radio ESOL, I gained the confidence to speak.โ€

Another student, Aidel Borges, added: โ€œIt's fun, helps you gain more confidence, and also helps you learn more vocabulary. I don't miss a single episode.โ€

Our Public Services students brought road safety to life with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service before the Easter break. ๐Ÿš’

Over 400 students took part in a two-day road safety education event delivered by staff from Hunslet Fire Station at our Quarry Hill campus.

Each day concluded with a live road traffic collision demonstration, using student volunteers as casualties to reinforce key road safety messages and highlight the role of West Yorkshire Fire Service at these incidents.

A great insight for our students, providing them with knowledge and awareness not only for their future careers but everyday life.

Sustainable meets sensory at Leeds City College๐ŸŒณ

Our high-needs students at The Vine campus have benefited from a new purpose-built sensory wall in collaboration with the RE: Workshop.

Staff and students worked together to create a digital sensory wall which incorporates touch sensitive lights, electric drums and projectors.

This is the latest project from the partnership - which has also produced bespoke accessibility equipment and sensory music equipment all of which support the learnersโ€™ engagement and wellbeing ๐Ÿ’š
