Congratulations to Kevin Sinfield on receiving a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours.

A Leeds Rhinos and England legend, international coach and inspirational fundraiser, Kevin has become one of the most admired figures in British sport.

Kevin's connection with Leeds Beckett spans decades. He graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Sport & Exercise Science in 2008, returned to complete an MA in Sport Business in 2015, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Sports Science in 2019.

Kevin's fundraising efforts for the Motor Neurone Disease community, inspired by his friendship with former Leeds Rhinos teammate and fellow Leeds Beckett alumnus Rob Burrow CBE, have inspired millions and raised significant funds for charities, research and support services.

Also included in The King’s Birthday Honours is an OBE for alumna Emily Scarratt for her services to Rugby Union. Emily called time on an incredible playing career late last year, retiring as one of England's most capped players and holding the record for all-time points-scorer.

Congratulations to both Sir Kevin Sinfield and Emily Scarratt OBE from everyone at Leeds Beckett on this well-deserved honour.

We were delighted to be presented with a prestigious Queen Elizabeth Prize for Education by Their Majesties The King and Queen at St James’s Palace.
The prize, which forms part of the UK Honours system, recognises the impact of LBU's Educational Alliance with HMP Full Sutton (LEAF) led by LBU criminologists, Dr Bill Davies and Dr Alexandria Bradley. It celebrates their project's pathbreaking and innovative approach to prison education and its clear benefit to society.

LEAF is based in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and brings high quality, relational and inclusive education into HMP Full Sutton, which is a long-term high secure Category A and B men's prison. The work helps inmates gain real-world qualifications through targeted study that increases their life chances.

Since its creation, LEAF has been driven by a commitment to widen educational participation in communities that have experienced significant disadvantage. The team draws on lived experience of incarceration, trauma-informed practice and research-led teaching. This enables them to design learning that is meaningful and supportive for men in custody. Many learners have experienced serious disruption in their education before entering prison.

The Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Education are part of the UK national honours system, recognising at the highest level of state outstanding work in UK universities and colleges that demonstrates excellence, innovation and benefit for the institution and the wider world.
