I DIDN’T GET THE GRADE I NEEDED; WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

Whatever result you achieved yesterday on your GCSE maths should be a cause for celebration; you worked hard, and completing the course is an achievement in itself. However, it can be disheartening for some learners if they didn’t manage to achieve the grade they needed. Here are a few pointers of what might happen next:

⭐️ REMARKS - if you were only one or two marks away from the next grade boundary, your teachers at school will probably have already considered your papers to be sent back to the exam boards for a remark. The grade boundaries have been published online if you want to have a look.

It is important to remember that remarks could also move your mark down, so think carefully about how close you are to the grade boundaries.

It may also be the case that there is a cost passed on to you for the remark.

⭐️ RESITS - if you didn’t get at least a 4 in your GCSE maths, you will be required to resit the exams. Get in touch with the college or sixth form that you are heading to, to find out what their arrangements are for this. There may be an opportunity for some learners to switch to a Functional Skills qualification instead.

The next opportunity to resit GCSE maths (or English) is in November. If you are intending to resit in November, please note that this is only 10 weeks away; get revising now, and make the most of all of the support on offer from college.

It is often free to resit GCSE maths, if you are trying to achieve a 4. You will need to continue resitting until you are 18, or you get your 4.

If you did achieve a 4 or above, but didn’t get the grade you wanted/needed, you will still be able to resit in November if you would like. Let your college/sixth form know as soon as possible if this is the case, and get going on revising now. You may have to pay a fee for this resit.

I still have some availability for September, get in touch if you would like a conversation about the support a learner-centred tutor can offer.

Every learner is a unique individual with different goals, strengths and needs. As a learner-centred tutor, I offer tuition that:

⭐️ Centres around a trusting, respectful relationship

⭐️ Is tailored to work towards your end goal - GCSE, Functional Skills, A Level, Entry Level Certificate, or simply a desire to understand maths better without the end point of a formal examination

⭐️ Is free from judgement, shame or embarrassment. Many people carry a lot of anxiety about maths; I will help you to make and celebrate progress from any starting point

⭐️ Is designed with you to complement your schedule and learning preferences

⭐️ Works with your brain rather than against it. I have training and experience in working with learners with a range of neurotypes, SEND, SEMH and trauma; my tuition is individually tailored so that you can learn in the way that is best for you

Hi! I’m Charlotte, a secondary maths teacher based in Lancaster. I offer learner-centred maths tuition in your home or online.

I grew up in the local area, and still live in Lancaster with my partner, and our cats, rabbits and snake.
