New name, same great judo! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅ‹

Welcome to Fylde Coast Judo Academy!

We were established in 2023 as Fylde Coast Judo Education and Judo Education Kirkham by BJA Level 3 Judo Coach and 2nd Dan Black belt Daniel Hankinson.

Our new name reflects the merging of identities between these two clubs to promote inclusiveness and camerdarie and a desire to deepen the bonds between the players who train with us.

We are still a proud part of Judo Education that works with local schools providing judo to many local children around Lancashire.

We provide Judo classes to all ages, operating term time and offer opportunities to grade, compete and learn whilst making friends and having fun along the way!

U K E M I

Let's talk about break falls (ukemi).

Before we teach your child how to throw we will teach them how to fall. The ability to fall safely isn't just a skill for Judo, it is an essential life skill that can lead to reduced injury risk at home, in the playground and even into old age!

We have received countless anecdotes from children who slipped and fell in the play ground, at home and even at the side of swimming pools and have said they used their breakfalls to keep themselves safe.

From the British Judo website:

"The fear of falling breeds a vicious cycleโ€”avoidance of activity leading to muscle deterioration, a decline in balance, and subsequently an increased likelihood of falls. This fear isnโ€™t merely physical; it spirals into isolation and loneliness, impacting mental and physical well-being. Itโ€™s a poignant reality: the fear of falling directly correlates with the likelihood of falling.

Enter judoโ€”the solution lying within the core of our sport. The essence of judo involves mastering the art of falling safely, an integral skill ingrained in its practice."

British Judo is having rapid success with it's Finding Your Feet initiative aimed at older populations which shows the effect that break falling can have on wellbeing, confidence and 'breaking' the fear of falling.

And so our philosophy with children in our classes is simple. If we can ingrain safer falling practices at a young age, we will see more confident, resilient and potentially more active and healthier individuals as they transition into adulthood and older age.

This is one of the many things we mean when we say that Judo is for life.
