Our club championship finals day are this Sunday. ๐ฆ ๐
Lots of our players have had fresh restring for their semi finals and the finals they are playing in. ๐งถ ๐พ
I've been approached many times to ask when is the best time to restring my racket. So with a little help from Chat GPT. I thought I'd give everyone a little insight into the importance of regular restringing and the impact thar having strings in for too long can have on your game.
๐ค โบ
Changes in weather conditions also have an effect on the string tension. โ โ
If you'd like me to take a look and give you the best advice, please catch me at the club or drop me a message. ๐ฑ
Check out the info below ๐
๐พ General Rule of Thumb ๐
> String your racket as many times per year as you play per week.
So, if you play twice a week, you should string your racket at least 2 times a year.
๐ Other Important Factors
1. Frequency of Play
Recreational (1โ2x/week): Every 3โ6 months.
Regular (3โ4x/week): Every 1โ2 months.
Competitive (5+ days/week): Every 2โ4 weeks or even weekly.
2. Type of Strings
Natural Gut / Multifilament: Lose tension faster, so restring more often.
Polyester (e.g., Luxilon, RPM Blast): Go dead before breaking, so restring even if not broken.
3. Tension Loss
Even without use, strings lose tension over time (10%+ in the first 24 hours). If your racket feels โmushyโ or lacks control, itโs time.
4. String Breakage
If you break strings often, youโll need to restring more frequently. (Some advanced players string multiple times per week.)
Weather can significantly affect tennis strings โ changing how they perform, how long they last, and even how your shots feel. Here's a breakdown:
---
โ๏ธ HOT WEATHER
๐ฅ Effects:
Strings lose tension faster: Heat causes the strings to expand slightly and lose tension more quickly, reducing control.
Power increases, control decreases: Looser strings = more trampoline effect.
Synthetic gut and multifilament strings degrade faster in heat.
Polyester strings go dead faster, even if they don't break.
โ
Tips:
Consider stringing at slightly higher tension in hot weather.
Store rackets in a cool, shaded place (not the trunk of your car!).
Check out
---
โ๏ธ COLD WEATHER
๐ง Effects:
Strings stiffen: Cold air tightens the strings, reducing the trampoline effect and making them feel harsher.
Loss of feel and power: Shots may feel "dead" or less responsive.
Increased risk of string breakage, especially with natural gut or old strings.
Poly strings feel especially stiff in cold weather.
โ
Tips:
Lower your tension a bit to regain feel and comfort.
Use softer strings (e.g., multifilament or hybrid setups) if playing in consistent cold.
Warm up your racket (keep it inside until you're ready to play).
---
๐ง HUMIDITY & RAIN
๐ง๏ธ Effects:
Natural gut absorbs moisture: It swells and becomes soft, reducing durability.
Tension can fluctuate due to moisture exposure.
Ball feels heavier: More strain on strings.
Increased string movement and reduced snapback (especially for spin players).
โ
Tips:
Avoid using natural gut in high humidity or wet conditions.
Use polyester or synthetic strings in damp conditions.
Dry your racket and strings ASAP after a wet session.
---
๐ฆ Pro Tip: Storage Matters!
Always store your racket in a climate-controlled environment.
Use a thermal-lined tennis bag if you're commuting in extreme heat or cold.

๐พ Player Spotlight ๐ฆ โ Isobelle
Weโre incredibly proud of all our junior players at Wrea Green Tennis Club, and today weโre shining the spotlight on Isobelle.
As one of our older juniors, Isobelle is a fantastic role model for many of our younger players who really look up to her.
She had a brilliant year last season, winning the Girlsโ Singles Championship at the Club and being named the Anthony Dobson Junior of the Year.
This year, Isobelle has continued to make huge strides in her game, breaking into our Ladiesโ 2nd Team โ a fantastic achievement and a real testament to the extra time she dedicates to training, both with other players and on her own.
Isobelle also serves as our Junior Representative on the committee, regularly speaking with our Coach and committee members to share ideas and feedback from our junior players. Sheโs a brilliant ambassador and a key part of our community.
Well done, Isobelle! Your hard work and dedication have been noticed and appreciated by everyone at Wrea Green Tennis Club ๐๐

We've seen some fantastic progress from all the children at our club this year.
This week, weโd like to shine a spotlight on one of our players ๐ฆ
Lucy K ๐พ
Lucy wasnโt seeing the improvement she hoped for in a group setting, so we decided to switch to 1-2-1 coaching to better support her development.
When we first started, it was tough to maintain a rally. Confidence was low, self-doubt had crept in, and frustration was getting in the way. So we went back to basics with bounce-tap rallies to rebuild skills and confidence.
Over the course of just 8 x 30-minute sessions, Lucy has made incredible strides.
Last night, she hit a personal best: a 30-shot rally with one bounce, using full technique throughout.
As a coach, itโs been amazing to witness Lucy's transformation into a confident, capable tennis playerโsomeone who now understands how to handle both wins and losses, and how to face challenges head-on. This mental growth has been just as important as the technical progress.
Drip-feed learning and taking the time to find the right approach for each individual player is so important. After months of steady, focused work, Lucy has had a breakthrough week. Sheโs grown into her game and is playing like a completely different player.
At summer camp, Lucy even made her own decisions about what level was right for herโshowing real self-awareness and maturity in how she wants to develop her tennis.
Outstanding effort and a joy to see Lucy beginning to fulfill her potential on court.
Well done, Lucy K! ๐๐พ
