It has been a while since we have last shared an update. Regarding the school garden, we have been very busy since our local team built our great polycrub space. (funding from Kilgallioch community fund 🙏). The gardening club is up and running again and it is over subscribed which is great news, loads of keen gardeners in the making.. we have planted our potatoes, peas and beans so far. We have also been busy sieving all the soil dug out when building the polycrub. This soil is being used in all our tubs and for the base of our peas and beans. The stones we have collected are making a new path through the school garden. Next week we will start planting in the polycrub.

The Garden Guardians team thanked three amazing community volunteers today for building our Polycrub Tunnel 🐞 Mark, Dave and Chris gave up many hours of their time to build this for us. The poly tunnel will give an additional outdoor learning space, allow us to plant a wider variety of vegetables and let Garden Club happen on even the rainiest of says. Created in the Shetland Islands it's designed to withstand even Kirkcolm's windy days!! 💨🍂

🐛🐔Kirkcolm School Garden Guardians are over the moon to have received £1536 from The Galloway Association of Glasgow. This will fund garden equipment, materials and the creation of new features. We have lots of exciting plans for Garden Club in the new school year, watch this space!! 🪲🐞

We are looking for volunteers to help at the garden at Kirkcolm School this Saturday the 22nd June. We will be there from 10 am until 12 am.
We will be weeding, cutting back and adding to the chicken pen.

If you would like to come and help you are more than welcome. Please pop down and bring any suitable tools and a drink.

Please note we wont have access to the school.

I thought I would share some pictures of our afterschool gardening club tonight. We were lucky with the weather and we tackled lots of jobs outside.. the children showed great enthusiasm and amazing teamwork.. thanks must go to all that help we receive from the local community ☺️ to keep on top of this lovely garden

Kirkcolm School Garden Guardians would like to thank Rhins Mens Shed for the fantastic new bird table, which will hopefully get even more birds visiting our garden 🐦🐦‍⬛ Also Wheatley Homes South Repairs Team (Stranraer) for donating wood for future garden projects and local resident Ian for the fencing 🐔 We are so grateful for local business and community support 😀

Local friends

I am on the scrounge 😁

I am coordinating putting in a new chicken coop and run at kirkcolm school.. I am looking for 3 things please

1. 4 chickens for the coop.. no particular breed, full size, not bantoms. Does anyone know of any?

2. An incubator to borrow that we could hatch 6-8 eggs in

3. 6-8 fertilised chicken eggs

If anyone can help/advise with any of the above it would be greatly appreciated 😊

Kirkcolm school parent council managed to secure funding from the wind farm fund from Kirkcolm Community Council. This funding is being used to help enhance the outdoor education of the school children in a sustainable way.

So far, we have installed a 2 compartment compost bin which has been made from recycled plastic. The children helped construct it and they are now using it to recycle waste material from the school kitchen and the garden.

Yesterday we had a great morning with a team of school parent helpers and locals, Mark Clayton and Dave Taylor. We put together our newly purchased chicken run and coop. Having this extra help from the community allowed us time to tidy and enhance our school garden. Our thanks must go to everyone who helped with this, especially to locals Mark & Dave, your help is invaluable and very much appreciated… next step chickens!
