When a teacher reads aloud, something quietly extraordinary happens. In that shared moment, time seems to soften: voices slow, bodies settle, and a group of separate individuals becomes one listening mind. This image captures that magic—the way a simple story can become a bridge between teacher, children, and the vast inner worlds they’re still learning to explore. 📖
From a neurological standpoint, read-alouds activate complex networks in the brain: language, imagination, empathy, and even sensory areas light up as children “feel” the story in their minds. But there’s another, subtler layer—co-regulation. As students tune into the teacher’s voice, rhythm, and expression, their nervous systems sync, creating a shared emotional space. In that space, safety grows, and with safety comes the freedom to wonder, question, and feel.
Perhaps that’s why so many of us can still remember the sound of a teacher reading to us decades later. It wasn’t just the plot; it was the sense of being held in a moment that felt bigger than ourselves. In a world of constant noise and fragmented attention, these rituals of collective listening feel almost sacred. What read-aloud memory has stayed with you, either as a student or as a teacher? Let’s honor those voices that once guided us through stories. 💫❤️

I’ve just seen this on a post on my personal page. It is so true.

Learning to read has become so politicised that we sometimes lose sight of the fact that we already have the answers.
So isn’t it time we did what’s best for EVERY child and just followed the science.

Low confidence, poor self esteem and anxiety all stem from thinking you’re ’stupid’, different to your friends’, ‘crap’.

I feel so privileged that I can prove to the young person (and the adults around them) that they’re not ‘being lazy’, that they are listening and they are trying to learn - but their brain doesn’t work the same way as the brains of people without dyslexia.

In 26 years of teaching, I’ve heard it all, and it still breaks my heart.
Jamies’ message is so important.

Early identification changes lives.
