It’s been a painful afternoon in the art studio. 🤪 Actually it was a lot of fun. I got to relive my prior days as a makeup artist, showing some of my youngsters how to use special effects makeup techniques to create gory injuries. They each went home with their own SFX kit and some new skills, ready to create some more suitably gruesome looks this halloween. 👻 Well done girls!

It’s been a busy Friday in the art studio! We had some of the level 2 art course ladies working hard on this week’s project followed by a group of lovely therapists who attended for a private watercolour class in the afternoon. They painted this pretty pen and wash garden scene and I think they all did a beautiful job. 👏 Looking forward now to Sunday when I’ll be hosting a very unusual and gruesome special effects makeup session with some of my younger artists! 👻 Rhiannon

Just tinkering in the studio and realised quite how much I do like a path painting!

It was the second autumn leaf painting class today and I was so impressed with all the leaves that were produced! Three hours to paint one leaf may seem like a lot of time; but when you’re approaching a botanical painting with realism as a goal, it takes a lot of work and patience! We started with wet in wet techniques and then gradually built up layers, creating depth and detail before using glazing techniques to bring some harmony to the entire painting. Everyone did an absolutely beautiful job- well done and thank you for coming! And thanks to Cristina for the lovely pics of the studio in the autumn sunshine this morning xx

This week in our Level 2 art class, we explored the importance of colour temperature in painting, alongside saturation and value. Understanding warm and cool hues is key to mixing colours that capture light, create depth and atmosphere, and distinguish warm sunshine from cool shadows.

During our class, students analysed and swatched colours from a reference photo before creating a loose, quick painted sketch- the purpose of which was to be a temperature guide for a further painting rather than a refined painting in itself.

This was a challenging week with students working in their own choice of watercolour or oils. Working fast and loose was another challenge in itself but everyone tackled it head on and did very well! I didn’t manage to photograph everyone’s work this week but here are some photos of the ones I did snap, alongside my little demos. Onto week 6 we go! 👏

Aww can’t believe we have nearly finished the stitch journal Volume 1. Today I have made the cover for mine, a little test run before students are given their own fabrics to complete their own cover. I love how tactile this journal is in all its squishiness. We have just completed Septembers page which was an English paper piecing quilt block in autumnal colours and fabrics and they are looking splendid!

A lovely morning spent with two ladies who attend my regular journal class, they wanted to get the best out of their sewing machine and so I put together a bespoke class to do just that.

We covered all sorts! We put their sewing machines through their paces, sewing on woven fabrics, linens, fine lawn and stretch fabrics. We tested, checked and experimented to see which stitches worked best for each fabric and finishes.

It was a bit like my Beginner Sewing Class, but with added Pizazz!

The end project was for them to make their very own zip pouch, and they did a grand job. Two more happy fledglings leaving the studio, ready to tackle the big ideas they both have. I look forward to seeing what they produce at home.

I had a lovely morning in the studio today painting leaves with some wonderful ladies. Botanical painting with watercolour is no easy task. It can be an extremely satisfying and meditative process but also takes a lot of patience, thought & perseverance. Well done to my students for your brilliant work, and also well done to my young girls who came in this afternoon to continue their own painting projects. ❤️

Evening all and happy Friday! We are very excited to be able to say that our complete offering of festive classes for this year are now up and bookable on our website. We have a lovely variety of classes on offer with lots of opportunities to learn a new skill, make something special and embrace the Christmas spirit.

The Ducks in the Snow oil painting class and Watercolour Winter Landscape are already both fully booked but if you missed out and would have been interested, please let us know and we would be happy to look at scheduling additional dates for those in November.
