Introducing the Lustre Chair, the latest work by Clare CLARE NG - a former student here Waters & Acland Furniture School 👏🏻

Inspired by the structural intelligence of the traditional Windsor chair, Lustre takes a contemporary approach, replacing flowing curves with carefully considered proportions, straight lines and crisp, faceted surfaces.

Each chamfer catches the light differently, giving the chair a changing character from every angle. The hand planed spindles feature carefully resolved facets, with the chamfers meeting to create subtle V-grooves along their length.

It’s a piece full of considered details - from the overall proportions, right down to the individual surfaces of each spindle.

Clare is now an award-winning fine furniture maker, including being awarded a Bespoke Guild Mark by The Furniture Makers’ Company

We’re incredibly proud to see our former students continuing to be so creative and following their own paths. We always love seeing what they’re making and watching them develop their work, and it’s fantastic to see Clare doing so well. 🤩

The Carlito Cabinet by former Designer Maker student Atelier Blouberg was inspired by the brutalist architecture of Carlo Scarpa, with walnut sliding doors and intricate fluting. Made during his time on the Designer Maker Course.

It’s always great to see where our students go after leaving the school, and Ruben has since set up Atelier Blouberg in Sorgues, near Avignon, creating unique and bespoke furniture. 👏🏻

Matt Acheulean Design had a little more work to do on his sideboard before the end of term, and fitting those incredible door panels is definitely not something to rush!

It’s still shaping up to be another fabulous student project - Matt’s final self-designed piece on the Designer Maker Course.

Matt will be finishing off the final details from home, and we’ll be sharing some finished pics with you when it’s complete. We can’t wait to see it all come together!

In case you missed this one first time around… Jon has created a seriously impressive drinks cabinet in elm as his final piece on the Designer Maker course. Hopefully you can tell from this reel just what an accomplished build it is.

This quick tour takes in some of the details, both hidden and on show, from the beautifully lit interior and the three curved elm frames supporting the glass shelves, to the pull out drinks prep shelf, made from burr elm with a maple inlay. Beautiful work, Jon! 👏🏻

Another outstanding final piece from our 1-Year Designer Maker course. 👏🏻

Designed and made by Jon Valo Designs, this stunning drinks cabinet in elm is packed with beautifully details. Open the doors to reveal a soft close cocktail preparation shelf in burr elm with maple inlay, wine storage drawer, a back-lit display cabinet with glass shelving, and two piston fitted drawers below. The curved laminated elm and glass doors tie everything together perfectly. Congratulations, Jon, outstanding work. 🙌

Another showstopper from Designer Maker student Matt Matt Farrell 🤩

Matt’s final piece on our 3-term Designer Maker course is this stunning hall unit in cherry. A tall, ambitious build featuring elegant through-post detailing, with hand shaped uprights flowing seamlessly through the cabinet top. Three silky smooth sliding doors complete the piece, each framed with crisp gunstock joinery.

An outstanding achievement! Congratulations Matt, we can’t wait to see what comes next! 👏🏻
