Come Forage with us this weekend 🍄‍🟫🍃

To celebrate the Bradford Pennine Gateway National Nature Reserve we’re taking part in the Nature Big Day Out. As part of a day full of great things outdoors we’ll be running 3 free foraging sessions.

Meet us at Bracken Hall Countryside Centre and learn about edible , medicinal and functional plants. Our sessions are running at 11am, 12pm &1pm and we’d love to see you there 🌱

Our ancestors gathered around the fire to celebrate these important moments in the calendar for thousands of years before us. We believe there’s something still within us that remembers that pull to the fire.

Join us on Sunday 27th of September for a special seasonal session to celebrate the Autumn Equinox (Mabon)🍎

A time for thanksgiving and gratitude we’ll spend the time together gathering from the earth to create autumnal wreaths, eating a traditional Mabon feast, holding a gratitude ceremony and having some forest school fun with axe throwing and archery.

The perfect way to spend a Sunday- recalibrating amongst nature before the turn of the season.

Axe throwing may look simple from the outside but it teaches our young people so much more than how to aim. It's about patience, controlling your body and having laser focus on the task in front of you. In a world which rarely asks children to slow down, axe throwing makes them. Every time they miss is as valuable as hit, because working out what went wrong and trying again is exactly the kind of resilience we are trying to build.

It might seem like a dangerous thing to hand a child an axe, but that's part of the learning too. Waiting your turn to collect, staying aware of everyone around you, handling the axe with care and respect rather than fear- these are exactly the kind of risk assessment skills forest school is here to teach.

So what might look like a high energy, fun, simple game (and it also is all those things too!) teaches so much more than it seems from the surface.

Keighley has amazing fishing! The river Worth is free to fish; no permit, no day tickets, just your UK licence and your fishing rod is all you need to catch stunning brown trout from Stanbury, Oxenhope, Haworth, Oakworth, Damems, Ingrow until it meets the Aire!

A cheap setup is all you need, get out there and start a hobby for life for you and your children and their children to come!

A reminder that despite us loving all this summer sunshine our Autumn term is only a few weeks away 🍁

Our regular Forest school sessions begin on September 5th.. and don’t tell Summer but Autumn might just be our favourite season in the woods!

Nothing better than food cooked on an open fire. There's something about the smell of smoke and the wait while everyone gathers round that makes it taste better than anything from a kitchen - it's what our ancestors did for thousands of years, and there's a real sense of community that comes from sharing food cooked this way together.

It's a brilliant skill for children to practice too, and a proper forest school one at that. Lighting and tending a fire teaches patience and self reliance in a way nothing indoors can. It's about learning through doing, working out for themselves how to manage the heat, judge the risk, and problem solve when something doesn't go to plan. That mix of independence and connection to nature is exactly what forest school is all about, and the sense of achievement when they've cooked their own food over their own fire stays with them long after the embers go out.

Plus it tastes good too!
