Fèis Phàislig Weekly Classes - applications now open
Looking for a fun way for your child to get involved in music, learn new skills and meet new friends? Fèis Phàislig’s weekly traditional music and Gaelic activities are open to children and young people of all ages, with no previous Gaelic experience needed.
• Gaelic Choir - FREE - Tuesday evenings at Castlehead High School
• Fèis Bheag (Wee Fèis) - Saturday mornings at West Primary School, P1-P4
• Instrumental Classes - Saturday mornings at West Primary School, P5+, with accordion, fiddle and guitar from complete beginner upwards
All sessions are delivered in English and no previous Gaelic experience is needed. We also have a number of funded places available for pupils in receipt of a clothing grant.
Applications close this Sunday, 23rd August.

Houston Primary School took part in the St Mirren Foundation's "Extra Time World Cup 2026" event. Pupils were able to engage, have fun, and connect with others from across the Renfrewshire area - and celebrate Scotland's return to the footballing world stage.

Both our teams played fantastically well (despite the heavy rain and against challenging opposition) to achieve 1st and 4th place in their World Cup groups.

Pupils were awarded medals for their achievements - and were delighted to listen to Drums and Roses performing several of their hits during the closing ceremony. A huge thanks to our wonderful football coach, Mr Patterson who gives up his free time for training sessions before school starts.

Primary 7 Valedictory

On Friday our Primary 7 pupils were presented with their secondary school ties, funded by our Parent Council at the special end of term service held at Houston and Killellan Kirk.
Awards were also presented to pupils from Mrs Murray in recognition of their outstanding achievements during their primary school years.
Parents were invited back to school for refreshments and a delicious strawberry tart.

We wish them all well at secondary and look forward to hearing about their achievements and future careers.

New Trim Trail
We are delighted to have a brand new trim trail for our senior pupils to play on.
Parent Council members have worked tirelessly organising events over the years and saved up enough funds from the various fundraising events to pay for this fantastic installation.
A huge thank you to all of the Parent Council members and to all parents and staff who support at these fundraising events, as without them none of this would be possible.
We are planning to save up for more pieces of equipment and extend the play area over the years.

Does your child find it difficult to follow instructions? Here are ways to present information to your child to make it more likely that they’ll hear you, and comply:

Be direct. Make statements rather than asking questions:
Please sit down,” as opposed to “Are you ready to get out your homework?”

Be close. Give instructions when you are near your child, rather than calling out from across the room.

Use clear and specific commands. Instead of “Go ahead,” say, “Please go and make a start with your spelling homework.”

Give age-appropriate instructions. Speak to your child at a level they will understand. If your child is younger, keep things simple. “Please pick up the ball.”

Give instructions one at a time. Especially for kids who have attention challenges, try to avoid giving a series of instructions, like: “Please put on your school shoes, get your packed lunch box and meet me at the car.”

Keep explanations simple. Giving a rationale can increase the likelihood children will listen to a command, but they won’t if the command gets lost in it. For instance: “Go and get your coat on because it’s raining and I don’t want you to get wet.” Instead, try: “It’s raining. Go and get your coat on.”

Give kids time to process. After you give an instruction, wait a few seconds, without repeating what you said. Children then learn to listen to instructions given once, rather than learning that they don’t need to listen because the instructions will be repeated. Watching and waiting also helps keep us adults from doing what we’ve requested of our children to do.
