I've been watching a lot of videos of people overcoming adversity to achieve great things lately. These people always impress me, succeeding in situations I think I'd struggle to cope with.
When a video of Jack Thomas appeared in my feed I was blown away by his ability to play really difficult drum parts. Physical Education by Animals As Leaders is not an easy song for any drummer to play. Animals As Leaders drummer Matt Garstka is well known for his ability to "understand time, manipulate it, bend it, break it up and exploit its relative nature". Playing Matt's parts on Physical Education must have been a huge challenge for Jack but the speed and power with which he moves his stick between instruments is incredible. No wonder he said it was the most strenuous song he'd recorded to date. Between maintaining rhythms on various cymbals and toms Jack manages to include lots of fast notes on his snare drum, and they're not gentle ghost notes either; he really wallops it. He shows us in the introduction that he sometimes uses a left foot pedal to trigger a snare drum sample, but it’s not like that somehow makes what Jacks doing easy - it’s not, and he only plays that snare sample when he needs to play the small cymbal beside his high hat. Everything we see and hear Jack play in this song comes from an astonishing amount of effort, not just for a few minutes in front of the camera, but weeks of figuring out how to achieve the seemingly impossible after years of dedication to self improvement on the drums. Many Foo Fighters fans wondered why an unfamiliar jazz drummer called Omar Hakim was backing them at the Taylor Hawkins memorial concerts but for me it was the other way round. I stupidly didn't really listen to the Foos and learn to appreciate Taylor's drumming until he passed😞but I saw Omar Hakim rocking the Glasgow Concert Hall over 30 years ago. He's actually one of the most respected drummers in the world who's added his magic touch to countless songs you know and love.
