It’s easy to let your physical health take a backseat when you’re busy managing the demands of running a school. However, your physical health is closely linked to your mental well-being, and neglecting it can exacerbate stress and fatigue.
Why it matters
Regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to manage stress and improve your overall well-being. Studies show that exercise helps reduce anxiety, improve mood, and boost energy levels. Headteachers who prioritise their physical health are better equipped to handle the demands of their role.

When headteachers try to do everything themselves, they risk becoming overwhelmed and exhausted. By not delegating, you also deprive others of opportunities to grow and develop their skills. A lack of delegation can even lead to staff burnout and impact retention.
How to implement it:
✔️ Identify your strengths and weaknesses: Focus on what you do best and delegate the rest. This does not mean passing off all your responsibilities, but strategically identifying where others can step in and support.
✔️ Empower your senior leadership team: Trust your deputy head, heads of department, and other senior leaders to take ownership of certain areas of school management.
✔️ Involve your staff in decision-making: Giving staff a voice not only builds a sense of ownership and responsibility, it also lightens your workload. Regular staff meetings or focus groups can be an effective way to share the load.
Delegation not only helps you manage your workload more effectively, it also builds trust within your team and creates a more collaborative and supportive school environment.

When headteachers do everything, everyone pays the price.
When you try to carry it all yourself, overwhelm and exhaustion are never far away.
But it is not just your well-being at risk. By holding on to every task, you also deprive your staff of opportunities to grow and develop their skills. Over time, a lack of delegation can create frustration, increase workload pressures, and even lead to staff burnout, which has a direct impact on retention.
Delegation is not about stepping away from responsibility. It is about creating space for others to step in, contribute, and build confidence in their roles.
Strong leadership is about knowing what only you can do, and what you can share.

Great leadership is not about doing everything yourself.
As a headteacher, it can feel like everything lands on your desk. From big-picture strategy to day-to-day details, the temptation to oversee it all is strong.
But trying to do everything yourself is not sustainable, and it is not leadership.
You have a leadership team and staff for a reason. Delegating tasks is not about letting go of responsibility; it is about trusting your people, developing their strengths, and creating a culture where everyone contributes to the school’s success.
When you delegate well, you relieve your own burden and empower others to step up and shine.
Coaching can help you identify what only you can do, and what you can confidently pass on, so you can lead with clarity rather than exhaustion.

As a headteacher, the pace of school life rarely slows down. One challenge rolls into the next, and it can feel like there’s no space to catch your breath. But without time to pause, reflect, and reset, stress builds and clarity slips away.
That’s where mindfulness and reflection come in: small, intentional practices that create room to process your day and strengthen your resilience as a leader.
✔️ Start or end your day with 5-10 minutes of reflection: This could be a simple mindfulness practice, journaling, or just sitting quietly with your thoughts. Ask yourself: What went well today? What challenges did I face? How did I feel about those challenges?
✔️ Use mindfulness apps: If you’re struggling to find time, there are many free apps like Headspace or Calm that offer quick mindfulness exercises to fit into your day. Headspace offers free subscriptions to teachers in the UK. (https://www.headspace.com/educators)
✔️ Take mindful breaks: It’s easy to think you don’t have time to pause, but short breaks can improve focus and productivity. A few minutes of deep breathing or stretching can do wonders for your mental clarity.
Reflection allows you to make sense of your day and reset before diving into the next challenge, while mindfulness keeps you present and grounded.

When you’re always in “go mode,” it becomes harder to process the challenges of your day or recognise the successes, no matter how small.
Headteachers who don’t take time to reflect often report feeling more stressed and overwhelmed. Mindfulness has been shown to reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and help with decision-making.
Every leader deserves space to breathe, reflect, and grow. Coaching gives you that space. When you’re ready, let’s start the conversation.

In the whirlwind of school life, it can be easy to lose sight of your own thoughts and feelings. Constantly moving from one task to the next leaves little room for reflection.
However, making time to pause and reflect on your experiences is an essential practice for well-being.

Being a headteacher often means your time doesn’t feel like your own. The demands of leading a school can blur the line between your professional and personal life — emails at all hours, unexpected crises, and endless to-do lists.
That’s why boundaries aren’t a luxury. They’re essential.
Here's how you can implement boundaries in your working life:
✔️ Define your working hours: Set clear start and end times for your workday. While there may be the occasional late night or weekend commitment, it’s important to recognise when you’re stretching yourself too thin.
✔️ Prioritise your time: Focus on the most important tasks and delegate when you can. Your role as a headteacher is to lead, not do everything yourself.
✔️ Set expectations with others: Communicate with your staff and the wider school community about your availability. Let them know when you are free and when you need to focus on other tasks or take time off.
By setting clear boundaries, you give yourself the space to recharge, which will ultimately make you a more effective leader.

As a headteacher, it can feel like you’re expected to be “on call” around the clock.
Emails, meetings, crises: they don’t just stop at the end of the school day. And over time, that constant availability can take a toll on your personal time and your well-being.
The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) reported that in 2023, almost 50% of school leaders in the UK identified a need for mental health or wellbeing support.
That’s not a sign of weakness: it’s a signal of just how heavy the demands of leadership can be.
Your well-being matters as much as the work you do for your school community.
If you’re feeling stretched thin, coaching can provide a safe space to step back, process, and find strategies that protect both your leadership and your well-being.
Because when you’re supported, you’re able to show up at your best — for yourself, your staff, and your pupils.
Let’s make space for you to thrive, and for your school to do the same.

The pressures on headteachers in the UK have never been higher. Between government directives, Ofsted inspections, the long hours, and the increasing challenge of staff retention, it can sometimes feel like your personal wellbeing is the last thing on your to-do list.
So what can you do about it?
One thing is to Set Realistic Boundaries and Stick to Them.
One of the hardest aspects of being a headteacher is knowing when to say no. It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that you must be available to everyone all the time. However, constantly putting your school’s needs before your own will quickly lead to burnout, and then you won't be able to help anyone.
