We paused last year, and this is why. If it resonates and you can support in anyway please do. For 18 years, our charity has funded education, healthcare, and sustainable farms in Malawi to bridge the massive gap of inequality. But this year, that gap hit us in a deeply personal way.
Last year, sitting in a hospital room facing the terrifying reality that Arrow could lose his leg, my world shrank to those four walls for months. But while tracking updates on our SEND centre in Malawi from his bedside, the disparity in global healthcare hit me harder than I can put into words.
I thought constantly about the mothers in Malawi facing that exact same heart wrenching fear except without an Alder HeyHospital, without specialized medical research, without access to life-saving medication, and without a Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey to give them a place to rest.
Arrow made an incredible recovery, with the best medical support. This challenge is really about that disparity, the one that hurts so deeply just to think about. In the UK, we are so fortunate simply by the chance of where we were born, and it’s so easy to take it for granted. The hard truth is that if Arrow had suffered his injury in Malawi instead, he wouldn't have been climbing Holyhead Mountain last week, I’m unsure he would have survived.
We are infinitely grateful to every single person who held our family up through last year. There when we needed it the most.
Now, we want to extend that same lifeline to families who don't have the safety net we had.
