Don't miss out! You can catch up on our students' latest work here..

On December 9th, we braved the wet and windy weather—right in the middle of Storm Bram!—to walk to St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Holsworthy. We were on an exciting mission: to put together the final stage of our Christmas tree decoration project.
Our challenge was to create a collection of handmade decorations based on the theme of a woodland winter wonderland. Whenever possible, we used recycled materials from the Holsworthy Resource & Scrap Store, which made the project feel even more meaningful.
We started by adding the cardboard star garland to the tree, followed by hand painted cork mushrooms. We used acrylic paint to create detailed winter scenes on wooden slices and carefully placed these around the tree. We also hand stitched textiles decorations, including adorable felt foxes and mushrooms.
My personal challenge was to make the tree topper. I took inspiration from Van Gogh’s The Starry Night 1889, especially the swirling patterns in the sky. I used a wooden star as my base, then cut thick strips of blue and yellow paper to match the painting’s colour palette. Using paper-quilling techniques, I added a 3D effect before gluing everything onto the star and finishing it off with some festive text in the centre.
Inside the church, we were welcomed by rows of Christmas trees decorated by local groups and businesses. We enjoyed being able to look at the displays and appreciated all the creativity on display.
We’ve put so much hard work and love into our tree, and we would be absolutely thrilled to win! If you’re planning to visit the Christmas Tree Festival, please take a moment to vote for us. The festival runs from Wednesday 10th December to Sunday 14th December, and every vote really does make a difference.
